Gallery DAM presents Lee Eunmi's curated exhibition Day and Beside in the fall of 2026. The artist treats every element of nature — the wind, the trees, the light — encountered through quiet observation and walks in her everyday life, as objects of contemplation and attention.
In this exhibition, rather than reproducing nature as it appears, Lee Eunmi builds up, layer upon layer, the faint traces left behind as light and wind pass through. The energy of a fleeting moment captured in an ordinary park or along a roadside tree, fused with the artist's own subjective emotion, is rendered in soft pastel color and flowing touches. The new paintings on view capture an invisible energy beyond what is visible, and the quiet order of time.
To the Sun, depicting a moon rising over a forest ridge at dusk, and Black and Blue Time, painted in the sunken hues of deepening blue-black, both seize the energy of the moment when light and darkness cross. One Among Them and Falling magnify, with microscopic attention, a fragment of nature easily passed by unnoticed, inscribing the flow of time within trembling brushwork. Even Outside the Fence, depicting clouds billowing beyond a fence, and Enough, in which a reddish glow is held within a dark, clustered form, press onto the canvas the energy that seeps out quietly from behind what is visible. From Carving into the Beach, which layers the pebbles of a shore with the shade of trees, to Becoming Something, which captures a form not yet given any name, Lee Eunmi's canvases pursue not the outward appearance of her subjects but the afterimage of sensation and emotion they leave behind.
Seventeen new works will be presented in this exhibition.
Artist's Statement
The moment light passes through and trembles — that vibration before it has even been named — is the starting point of my work. When I gaze at nature, I come to feel that light itself is a kind of god, and so is time. Even passing the same tree every day, the grain of its light and wind is never quite the same, and only once these differences accumulate does a faint order begin to reveal itself.
I do not reproduce nature as it appears to the eye. I merely carry onto the canvas the traces left behind as light brushes past and wind passes through — traces that fade yet never entirely disappear. These small traces, layered one upon another, gradually become one vast field — that, for now, is how I draw nature into painting.
Lee Eunmi – Briefly Shining Things
Park Young-taek (Prof. at Kyonggi Univ., Art Critic)
1. Nature is the other that is extremely obscure. Rather, all the others are beings beyond our complete understanding. They have forms, colors and names given by humans, which are all too poor to fully reach the reality of the objects. Rather, the reality of all beings is in an opaque realm absolutely unreachable. It is a considerably ambiguous experience, therefore, that we open our eyes to see and feel nature with our bodies. It is relevant not only to nature existing outside the human body, of course. It is also relevant to all things and human beings, and we even find ourselves strange and difficult to understand.
Lee Eunmi paints nature. The history of nature paintings is incredibly old, and to that extent, numerous previous examples have accumulated in this field of art. It is known that, in the history of European painting, nature itself came to the fore as an independent subject of painting around the seventeenth century. It thus became more than the background of mythology, religion and so on, thereby revealing its existence. Since then, there have been myriad paintings representing natural scenery, followed by artistic attempts to capture what lies beyond the surface. Unlike European painting, on the other hand, Northeast Asian painting has a long tradition of using nature as a subject, historically devoted to painting the invisible energy of nature, namely the spirit and its resonance.
Lee paints the nature that she encounters while taking a walk in a park near her studio, or in her daily life. It seems to have begun around 2021, considering the collection of her works. Certainly, even earlier than that, she had always painted nearby objects in her daily life. Those blurry paintings showed the interior or exterior of buildings, absent of humans, giving a desolate and gloomy impression. Then, her paintings escaped from those places blocked from sight, cornered or closed, and instead adopted nature shining in the light. Her paintings have become brighter naturally, with a changed atmosphere. Still, it is not easy to clearly recognize what is painted in them. This is similar to her earlier works. She erases clear forms and distinct colors, and instead adopts blurred and vague forms and subdued color tones, sweeping the canvas with short and small brushstrokes, looking almost broken, in order to express her subjective emotions or sentiments aroused by certain objects, rather than to depict the objects themselves. Most paintings are, in fact, the reflection of an artist’s peculiar mind. A good painting is born when this task is uniquely accomplished. It undoubtedly involves very difficult questions; what is the nature of that mind? Why does the mind arise? What does it mean to visualize it? Finally, is it really possible? Yet paintings are nothing but almost hopeless attempts to realize it, aren’t they?
2. The sky, clouds, wind, grass and flowers appear in Lee Eunmi’s recent works. She visits parks located in the city where she can learn and experience nature more completely. Otherwise, she observes trees and flowerbeds along the streets. This spontaneity is the driving force of her work. She applies oil paints softly on a relatively small canvas, and makes some kind of traces by tapping with a brush lightly. Rather than capturing an overall landscape, she focuses on a certain part of nature that she has found by penetrating it microscopically and partially, and then expresses it in a composition still cornered and stuck. The artist probably took a picture of nature that she had encountered on a walk, cut out a rectangular frame from it for collection and record, and used it as a clue to work on a painting. The shaky and moving perspective of walking, the composition of the camera angle, and the leaning of the body approaching the object are all overlapping with one another to create vibrations. On the whole, soft colors in lyrical pastel tones are gently flowing and carefully twinkling in her paintings. It seems that forming the outline of a specific object is not her intended result, and that she pushes the boundaries of what is possible to materialize and colorize a certain state of her emotions in her works, based on the basic conditions of painting, which are rectangular frames, paints/colors and brushstrokes. By using a visible object as a material, she delicately lets out the energy and emotions emerging from it. The object in her painting dimly appears, whose wavering shape looks pallid for a moment or briefly full of vitality, with the passage of time and in the flow of things. Nature is a living being that has its own life and death in time and space. For a human being as part of nature, to gaze at plants eventually means to understand the living things, or to humbly watch one’s own existence that belongs to the vast ecosystem. Hence, various thoughts and feelings cross one’s mind. This is ‘It’ that Lee wants to paint. The concrete objects in nature overlap and coincide with the disturbed and disheveled thoughts and feelings of a human being gazing at them, which turn into a work of art in the form of a painting.
3. Painting is all about brushstrokes and colors in the end. One must accomplish something with them. Thus, all painters try to master some unique and distinctive brushstrokes and color tones of their own. A good painting is full of such individuality. Even from a distance, therefore, the rushing scent of an individual makes one dizzy. It is recalled that Lee Eunmi has been an artist with her own unique color tones from the beginning. Her sense of color is definitely stronger than that of form. She substitutes colors for her feelings inspired by nature. As colors are transferred by brushstrokes, the touch of brushstrokes flowing in a certain direction, like water or light, implies the presence of an object in nature, and simultaneously represents the artist’s heart and mind wavering and torn with all kinds of thoughts when she looks at the object. Carefully moving horizontal brushstrokes intersect with vertical lines, implicitly showing sprouts, grass, flowers and tree stems, or barely indicating their presence, while bringing shining sunlight, drifting clouds, the dazzling sky, and gently blowing winds. Visible objects and invisible energies coexist. Paintings are reckless, or rather, inevitable attempts to show both visible objects and invisible things beyond them at the same time. It is precisely true of Lee’s works. The things which want to be seen, those which do not dare to be seen, those which want to be expressed, and those which cannot be expressed exist side by side in silence. Her paintings are absolutely quiet and still. No sound can be heard from them, of course. Still, good paintings stir all the senses of our body. They do not appeal only to the sense of sight. Indeed, her paintings express living organisms shaken by winds, wiggling in the sunshine, growing and vanishing in the course of time; they ultimately show the face of life, which is hectic yet supremely calm, solemn and beautifully repeated, the strict order of nature, and the ephemerality and transience of life. Things like wounds have finally become paintings, which fatally seeped into the delicate and good heart of the artist, and then were let out carefully.
