The twenty-seventh question says: "There are eight extraordinary meridians in pulse diagnosis, which do not belong to the twelve regular meridians. What does this mean?
Answer: There are the Yang Wei Vessel, the Yin Wei Vessel, the Yang Qiao Vessel, the Yin Qiao Vessel, the Chong Vessel, the Du Vessel, the Ren Vessel, and the Dai Vessel. All these eight vessels are not confined to the regular meridians; hence they are called the Eight Extraordinary Meridians.
There are twelve regular meridians and fifteen collateral vessels, making a total of twenty-seven qi pathways that travel up and down together. Why then are the Eight Extraordinary Meridians alone not confined to these regular meridian
Answer: The sage mapped out channels and ditches, ensuring the waterways were unobstructed, to be prepared for such situations. When heavy rain falls from the heavens and fills the ditches to overflowing, at such a time, torrential rains run rampant; even the sage cannot control it any further. This is analogous to the collateral vessels becoming overfilled, so that none of the regular meridians can contain or regulate them anymore.
The twenty-eighth question says: "Regarding these Eight Extraordinary Meridians, since they are not confined to the twelve regular meridians, where do they originate and where do they continue
Answer: The Du Vessel originates at the lower extremity of the shu points, runs along the spine, ascends to Fengfu,
The Ren Vessel originates below Zhongji, ascends from the pubic region, follows along the abdomen, reaches Guanyuan, and extends
The Chong Vessel originates at Qichong, runs parallel to the Foot-Yangming Stomach Meridian, ascends alongside the navel, and disperses in the ch
The Dai Vessel originates at Jiexie and encircles the body o
The Yang Qiao Vessel originates in the heel, runs upward along the lateral malleolus, and enters
The Yin Qiao Vessel also originates in the heel, ascends along the medial malleolus, reaches the throat, and interpenetrates with the Chong Vessel
The Yang Wei and Yin Wei Vessels connect throughout the body, but their qi accumulates without being able to circulate fully or irrigate all the regular meridians. Therefore, the Yang Wei Vessel originates at the convergence of all yang meridians, and the Yin Wei Vessel originat
This is comparable to the sage's planning of ditches and channels; when these overflow, they flow into deep lakes, hence even the sage cannot fully control or regulate them. When human qi is abundant and vigorous, it enters the Eight Extraordinary Meridians without circulating in a complete loop; therefore, even the twelve regular meridians cannot contain or regulate it. When these vessels are affected by pathogenic qi and the qi accumulates, swelling and heat occur; they should be treated with acupuncture or moxibustion.
The twenty-ninth question says: "What are the diseases caused by disorders of the Eight Extra
Answer: The Yang Wei Vessel supports the yang, and the Yin Wei Vessel supports the yin. When yin and yang cannot support each other properly, one may feel disoriented and lose mental focus, experiencing a state of confusion and an inability to control oneself. Disease caused by the Yin Qiao Vessel results in relaxation on the yang side and tension on the yin side. Disease caused by the Yang Qiao Vessel leads to relaxation on the yin side and tension on the yang side. Disease of the Chong Vessel causes upward-rebellious qi and tightness in the interior. Disease of the Du Vessel results in stiffness of the spine and syncope or reversal of yin-yang (厥). Disease of the Ren Vessel causes internal stagnation; in men, it manifests as seven types of hernia, and in women, as masses or accumulations (瘕聚). Disease of the Dai Vessel causes abdominal distension and a sensation of looseness in the waist, as if sitting in water. Disease of the Yang Wei Vessel is characterized by aversion to cold and fever; disease of the Yin Wei Vessel causes pain in the heart region. These are the diseases associated with the Eight Extraordinary Meridians' disorders.
