There are many different themes found within the book of Psalm. This psalm deals with the theme of kingship. And like many of the kingship psalms, this contains a curious mixture of emphasis on both divine and human kingship. Specifically in this psalm, God is expressing His right to rule over His creation in choosing and setting forward His choice for king. This makes reference to both the current Davidic king over Israel and also Christ Jesus. This is one of those glorious examples of how God inspires the writer to make mention of someone or something at that time, but the ultimate meaning refers to Jesus Christ.
The first question expresses the idea of the chapter quite clearly. “Why do the nations conspire and the peoples plot in vain?” God, as Creator of all things, rules over all things in an absolute and sovereign manner. This in no way implies that He is capricious, unkind, or unjust. He is simply in charge. The author is amazed that humanity as a whole seems entirely unable to grasp this concept. Since the creation of the world, God has been the Ruling Authority over it all, and yet humankind still insists on trying to make or go their own way.
We can see in verse 2 that the people are plotting not only against the Lord, but also against His anointed. And again referring to both the king of Israel at that time as well as to Jesus Christ at a later time.
What is God’s response to this? He laughs. It is not cruel laughter. It is akin to an astonished laugh, though at the same time removing any possibility that God is surprised at the outcome of events. Jeremiah 17:9-10 says, “The heart is deceitful above all things and beyond cure. Who can understand it? ‘I the LORD search the heart and examine the mind, to reward a man according to his conduct, according to what his deeds deserve.’”
The Lord knows our hearts far better than we do.
This entire psalm is expressing and rejoicing in the authority of God as Creator and King over the earth. Likewise, it rejoices in the authority given by God to the kings on this earth - both to the human king of Israel, and to the King of Kings Jesus Christ. In an age where rebelling against authority is the “in” thing to do, as Christians we should delight in serving the Lord our King, and rejoice with trembling (v. 11).

- Do I live my life submitting to and delighting in the authority of God over me as my Creator, Savior, and Sustainer?
- Am I ignoring the authority of those God has placed over me? How does my life and heart need to change in order to honor both God and those He has placed in authority over me?

Lord God, Creator of all things, I come before You today acknowledging Your authority and right to rule over every area of my life. Please forgive me for where I have tried to throw aside Your will and lived according to my own plan and desires. Give me wisdom to see how to fully honor You in every aspect of my life.
In Jesus’ name, Amen. |
