16. 특별한 해 2010년, A Very Special Year; 2010

[眞如華]

   부산 문수선원에서 하는 『화엄경』 공부에 10년이 걸릴 것이라고 못을 박았는데도, 161분의 스님들이 이 불사에 방부를 들였다.

법랍이 최소 20년에서 많게는 40년까지 되는 교계의 중진스님들이었다.

<화엄경 산림> 입재날 법회는 마치 바다 위에서 벌어지는 법회 같았다. 선원에 가득한 스님들의 먹물옷과 안개처럼 천지를 휘감는 비가 온 세상을 한동아리로 묶었다. 책상마다 박스째 놓여진 묵직한 4권의 한문『화엄경』세트는 희망이 가득 담긴 컨테이너 같았다.

<대방광불화엄경 산림 대법회>라고 하는 반야용선이 2010년 3월 1일 출발했다. 지켜보고, 기다리던 불자들이 환호했다.

2년 뒤, 무비스님은 문수선원에서 <불자들을 위한 화엄경 만일 법회>를 시작했다. 10년을 넘어 만일(萬日), 30년을 기약하는 법회에 문수선원이 가득 차고 자리가 모자랄 정도로 신도들이 모여들었다.

2010년 3월, 무비스님은 동국역경원 역경원장이 되었다. 43년 전 제1기 역경원 입학 동기였던 도반들이 모여서 ‘역경(逆境)에 빠진 역경원(譯經院)의 구원투수’라고 무비스님과 역경원의 앞날을 축하했다.

이 해에 중앙승가대학에서 무비스님에게 명예박사 학위를 수여했다. 무비스님은 2023년 겨울, 법제자인 용학스님에게 범어사 승가대학장과 화엄연구소 소장을 부촉하면서 이렇게 말씀했다.

“스님의 힘은 울력이다. 그간의 밥값을 내놓아야 한다.”

그 말씀 때문에 여러 번 고사하던 직책들을 받아들일 수밖에 없었다고 용학스님은 말했다. 무비스님이 병고를 안고도 몇 년간 서울과 부산을 통근하듯 오가며 수많은 법문을 한 것도 그 때문일 것이다.

     Even though it was clearly stated that studying the Avatamsaka Sutra at Munsu Seonwon in Busan would take ten years, 161 monks still signed up for this spiritual journey.

These were senior monks who had been ordained for at least 20 to 40 years.

The ceremony on the opening day of the <Hwaeom Sallim> felt like a grand assembly taking place on the middle of the ocean.

The monks' ink-colored robes filling the hall and the misty rain wrapping around the world brought everything together as one.

On every desk, there was a heavy box containing a four-volume set of the Avatamsaka Sutra in Chinese. These boxed sets looked like containers filled with hope.

The 'Dragon Boat of Wisdom,' officially called the <Great Hwaeom Sallim Assembly> , set sail on March 1, 2010.

The lay Buddhists who had been watching and waiting cheered with joy.

Two years later, Mubi Seunim started the '10,000-Day Avatamsaka Sutra Dharma Assembly for Lay Buddhists' at Munsu Seonwon.

The assembly was planned for 10,000 days—nearly 30 years of study. So many followers gathered that Munsu Seonwon was packed, and there weren't even enough seats for everyone.

In March 2010, Mubi Seunim became the Director of the Dongguk Sutra Translation Institute.

His dharma brothers, who had entered the institute together 43 years earlier, celebrated him as the ‘relief pitcher’ for the institute during its difficult times.

That same year, Joongang Buddhist University awarded Mubi Seunim an honorary doctorate degree.

In the winter of 2023, Mubi Seunim appointed Dharma disciple, Yonghak Seunim, as the Dean of Beomeosa Buddhist College and Director of the Avatamsaka Research Institute, saying:

"A monk's strength comes from service and hard work. Now, you must give back to repay all the support you have received over the years.“

Yonghak Seunim said that because of those words, he had no choice but to accept the positions he had turned down many times.

That is probably why Mubi Seunim traveled between Seoul and Busan for several years to give so many lectures, even while he was struggling with illness.
