Embedded(끼워 넣어진, 간직된) 이란 무엇인가?


임베디드 시스템(Embedded System)은 기계나 기타 제어가 필요한 시스템에 대해, 제어를 위한 특정 기능을 수행하는 컴퓨터 시스템으로 장치 내에 끼워 넣어진 전자 시스템이다.

The word, embed is a combination of the Old English prefix 'em-' meaning 'to put into' and the root 'bed' meaning 'a couch(침상), resting place(휴식처)'.

The word was first recorded in 1778 meaning 'to lay in a bed' and was at one time a geological term used to describe fossils found in rock.

카우치Couch 

고대 프랑스어인 ‘coucher(눕다)’가 중세 영어(서기 1150년경~1500년경 쓰인 영어)에 건너와 couch로 정착됐다. 

일반적으로 영국에서는 소파와 세티라는 단어를 쓰는 반면 북미, 아일랜드, 남아프리카공화국, 호주 등에서는 카우치를 사용한다.

본래 다리를 올려 눕거나 잠을 자기 위한 가구를 가리켰는데 현재에는 우리가 알고 있는 소파와 같은 뜻으로 쓰인다. 미국과 호주, 유럽 등에서 카우치를 쓸 때에는 소파와 기능상의 차이보다는 문화적 차이를 보인다.

예를 들어 뛰어다니기 부담스럽게 잘 꾸며진 거실에는 소파를, 아이들이 과자를 먹으면서 방방 뛰거나 어른들이 맥주 한 잔 즐기기 편한 거실에는 카우치를 쓰는 식이다.


소파Sofa

고대 중동지방의 언어인 아람어 ‘sippa: 현관 등에 까는 매트’에서 시작돼 아랍어인 ‘suffah: 나무나 돌로 된 벤치’가 17세기 유럽에 넘어오면서 sofa로 변형된 것으로 알려졌다. .

우리나라에서는 소파를 주로 쓰지만 영국에서는 상류층Upper Class가 중산층Middle Class의 카우치나 세티에 상응하는 단어로 사용했다.

보여주기 위한 가구의 개념과 손님을 맞이하는 자리로의 의미가 커 편히 누울 수 있는 카우치와 달리 ‘앉는’ 개념에 더 충실한 게 소파이다.
