Neil Sedaka 

Neil Sedaka는 1939년 3월 13일 미국 뉴욕의 부룩클린에서 태어나 피아노 교육을 받으며 
성장했다. 
13살 때 피아노 소품곡을 작곡할 정도로 실력이 출중했던 그였지만 가세가 기울어 아르바이트로 
피아노 레슨을 하며 학업을 계속해야 했다.  

그에게 레슨을 받던 학생중에 이웃집 소녀인 캐롤 킹도 있었는데 사춘기에 접어든 둘은 
쉽게 가까워졌다. 
닐은 자신의 마음을 담은 노래를 만들어 캐롤에게 선물했고 캐롤도 이에 보답하여 Oh! Neil을 지어 
닐에게 바치며 달콤한 사랑을 나누었다. 

둘의 첫사랑은 닐이 명문 음악학교인 줄리어드에 장학생으로 진학한 뒤에도 계속되었다. 
닐은 이 시절에 캐롤을 위하여 수많은 노래들을 만들었으나 이룰 수 없는 사랑과 함께 대부분 
알려지지 않았다, 

1956년 그해 최고의 피아니스트로 선정되기도 했던 닐은 친구인 작사가 하워드 그린필드와 
함께 엘 네빈스와 돈 커시너가 공동 운영하는 알돈 출판사에 작곡가로 입사하였다. 

그 무렵 이곳에는 캐롤 킹, 제리 고핀, 신디아 웨일, 배리 맨들이 팀을 이루어 근무하고 있었고 
그의 첫사랑인 캐롤 킹은 제리 고핀과의 새로운 사랑에 열중하고 있었다(뒤에 둘은 결혼하였다)

1958년에 가수로 데뷔한 그는  1960년대 초반까지 'Oh Carol', 'The Diary', 'Calendar Girl' 등의 
히트곡을 냈고 그의 대표곡이랄 수 있는  히트곡 'Breaking Up Is Hard to Do'등의 곡을 남겼다.
