SEOUL, Jan. 29 (Yonhap) -- The Constitutional Court will hold the first hearing of an impeachment trial for the chief state auditor on Feb. 12, according to the court Wednesday.

On Dec. 5, the opposition-controlled National Assembly passed an impeachment motion against the Board of Audit and Inspection Chair Choe Jae-hae, suspending his duties and leaving the decision over his fate to the court.

Choe is accused by the opposition of conducting a poor review of alleged irregularities surrounding the 2022 relocation of the presidential office, which took place in line with a campaign pledge of President Yoon Suk Yeol.

The court has held three pretrial hearings to decide the list of witnesses and lay out key issues to deliberate on during the upcoming hearings.
Choe is one of several government officials, including prosecutors, who have been impeached by the opposition-controlled parliament since Yoon took office in May 2022. It marked the first impeachment of a chief state auditor.

(서울=연합뉴스) 이미령 기자 = 최재해 감사원장에 대한 탄핵심판이 준비 절차를 마치고 다음 달 12일 본격적으로 시작한다.

헌법재판소 김형두·김복형 재판관은 22일 오후 감사원장 탄핵심판 사건의 3차 변론준비기일에서 추가 쟁점 및 증거 정리를 진행한 뒤 변론 준비 절차를 끝냈다.

첫 정식 변론기일은 내달 12일 오후 2시다.

헌재법에 따라 정식 변론에는 당사자가 출석해야 한다. 당사자가 출석하지 않으면 재판을 종료하고 다음 기일을 정하되 두 번째 기일에도 불출석하면 당사자 없이 재판할 수 있다.

김형두 재판관은 "별다른 일이 없으면 변론을 1회로 마칠 수도 있다"고 말했다.

헌재는 국회 측이 증인 신청한 이들 가운데 김태우 감사원 산업금융감사국장(전 기획조정실 기획담당관)과 김숙동 특별조사국장(전 특별조사국 제1과장)을 증인으로 채택했다.

탄핵소추 사유 가운데 각각 감사원이 국무총리에 감사청구권을 부여하는 내용의 업무계획 작성 여부 및 그 경위와 서해 공무원 피격 사건 감사 당시 보도자료 등의 작성 경위를 확인하기 위한 것이라고 김복형 재판관은 설명했다.

이들에 대한 증인신문은 내달 12일 첫 정식변론에서 각각 1시간씩 이뤄진다.

헌재는 앞서 국회의 탄핵소추 사유를 ▲ 감사원의 독립적 지위 부정 ▲ 국민권익위원장 표적 감사 ▲ 감사원장의 의무 위반 ▲ 국회 자료 제출 거부로 정리했다.
