16. 특별한 해 2010년, A Very Special Year; 2010

[眞如華]

무비스님이 동국대 역경원장직도 맡았으니 서울활동이 더더욱 활발해지리라고 모두들 기대했다.

그런데 그해 6월 8일 무비스님은 역경원장직을 사임했다. 서울에서 무비스님이 갚아야 할 인연의 빚은 세력이 다한 듯했다.

이제 무비스님의 힘은 문수선원의 <화엄법회>와 80권의 『대방광불화엄경 강설』을 집필하는 데 집중이 되었다.

그러한 즈음에 무비스님의 사형이신 통광스님이 화엄전으로 찾아오셔서 ‘감인대(堪忍待)’라고 써 놓은 칠판 앞으로 성큼성큼 가시더니 “이제는 좋은 일이 있어야지.” 하면서 ‘길상여의(吉祥如意)’ 라는 글귀를 써 놓으셨다.

무비스님의 ‘길상여의’는 법문 속에 다 드러나 있다.

이 세상에서 누구보다 무비스님을 잘 이해하는 통광스님이 무비스님의 서원을 모르실 리 없었다. 무비스님의 사형이신 통광스님은 2013년 9월 6일, 열반에 드셨다.

‘이번 <화엄경 산림 법회>는 내 생애 최후의 강의가 될 것입니다’라고 무비스님이 말했던 것은 2010년 문수선원 <화엄법회>에서 였다.

그보다 더 최후의 강의가 될 온라인 <화엄법회>가 10년 후에 시작되었다.

코로나가 한창이던 2020년, 무비스님은 유튜브에 <염화실TV>를 개국했다.

2020년 9월 6일, 첫 번째 라이브 방송을 하고, 4일 후인 10일부터 본격적인 온라인 <화엄법회>를 시작하여 지금까지 매일 새롭게 쉬지 않고 이어 오고 있다.

날짜와 장소가 무시무종인 불교이지만, 인연은 따박따박 그림자로 따라온다.

Everyone expected Mubi Seunim to be more active in Seoul because he became the Director of the Translation Institute at Dongguk University.

However, on June 8th of that year, he resigned from his position.

It seemed that Mubi Seunim had finished all his karmic connections in Seoul.

From then on, Mubi Seunim focused all his energy on the Hwaeom Assembly and writing the 80-volume commentary on the Avatamsaka Sutra.

Around that time, Mubi Seunim’s elder dharma brother, Tonggwang Seunim, visited Hwaeomjeon. He walked straight to the blackboard where the words ‘Endurance and Waiting’ were written. He said, 'Now, good things should happen,' and wrote down the words 'Good Fortune and Everything as You Wish'.

The meaning of this "auspiciousness" is revealed in all of Mubi Seunim's teachings.

Tonggwang Seunim understood Mubi Seunim better than anyone in the world, so he certainly knew Mubi Seunim’s great vow.

Tonggwang Seunim, Mubi Seunim’s elder dharma brother, entered Nirvana on September 6, 2013.

It was at the 2010 Hwaeom Assembly in Munsu Seonwon that Mubi Seunim said, 'This will be the final lecture of my life.‘

Ten years later, an online Hwaeom Assembly began. It was an even more 'final' lecture than the one before.

In 2020, in the middle of the COVID-19 pandemic, Mubi Seunim started a YouTube channel called ‘Yeomhwasil TV’.

Mubi Seunim had his first live broadcast on September 6, 2020. Four days later, on September 10, he officially started the online Hwaeom Assembly.

It has continued every single day without a break until now, always bringing something new.

In Buddhism, time and place are said to have ‘no beginning and no end,’ yet causes and conditions follow us closely, step by step, like a shadow.
