Gloria: Did you hear that Manuel is quitting? He took a job with another company.
* take a job = 취직하다

Sam: I’m not surprised. He came up against the glass ceiling and he decided to jump ship.
* come up against ~ = ~에 직면하다; ~와 대립하다/ glass ceiling = 유리 천장(여성이나 다른 집단이 높은 자리에 올라가지 못하게 막는, 눈에 보이지 않는 장벽)/ jump ship = (선원이 근무하던 배에서 무단으로) 배를 떠나다[배에서 내려 버리다]   

Gloria: Really? I didn’t know he was bucking for promotion.
* buck for ~ = [승진·이익 따위]를 얻으려고 기를 쓰다

Sam: He’s been trying to become a manager for three years, but other people have been promoted over him
or they’ve hired from outside the company.

Gloria: I didn’t know that. I was aware of the wage disparities within the company and
the gender pay gap within each department, but this is news to me.
* wage disparity = 임금격차/ gender pay gap = 성별 임금 격차/ news to me = 금시 초문이다

Sam: Haven’t you noticed that people who take extended leave to have children or try for some type of
work-life balance are passed over for plum assignments, raises, and promotions?
There are definite limits to advancement.
* take extended leave = 장기 휴가를 얻다/ work-life balance = 일과 생활[삶]의 균형[조화]/ pass sb over = (특히 자격이 있는 사람을 승진에서) 제외시키다/ plum = 일자리 등이 아주 근사한, 알짜의/ limit to ~ = ~의(에) 제한/ advancement = 승진; 발전, 진보 

Gloria: I thought it was just favoritism on the part of the bosses. Their friends got promoted and
other people didn’t.
* favoritism = 편애, 편파, 정실/ on the part of ~ = ~에 의한, ~에 책임이 있는; ~으로서는, ~쪽에서는, ~쪽의 

Sam: That’s certainly true, but that’s only part of the story.

Gloria: Why are we still working for a company with such unfair policies?
* unfair policy = 불공평한 정책

Sam: Speak for yourself. I’m giving notice today.
* speak for yourself = 나는 그렇지 않다/ give notice = 사직서를 제출하다; 통보[통지]하다
