Evening Sunlight
by D.J. Yoon
An old man with a gray beard
Stacks tangerines on his cart
He nods off while selling
nod nod
Winter evening sunlight
Sits on a tangerine
And greets the customers
In his place
A passing breeze
Softly shakes the old man’s shoulder
But he keeps nodding
nod nod
A customer comes and then
Without waking him
Quietly
Flies away
The evening sunlight that remains
On his cheeks
Turns them
Little by little
Redder and redder

Appreciation Review 感想
‘Evening Sunlight’ is a soft and warm poem that shows a quiet winter moment in a gentle way.
The words are simple and easy for children to understand, and the repeating ‘nod nod’ makes the scene feel calm and slow.
The sunlight is described as if it were a kind little helper, sitting on a tangerine and greeting customers while the old man sleeps, which helps children imagine the sunlight as a friendly presence.
The poem moves slowly, like the evening itself, and feels peaceful when read aloud.
At the end, the sunlight making the old man’s cheeks red gives a cozy and happy feeling, showing children that small moments can be warm and comforting.
