미국 신문 '샌프란시스코 크로니클'의 딘 피츠모리스 기자는 전쟁터에서 폭탄을 맞아 거의 목슴을

잃은 거나 다름없었던 9살짜리 이라크 소년이 샌프란시스코 '오틀랜드 병원'으로 옮겨져 치료를

받고 있는 생활을 카메라에 담아 전쟁의 비극을 가슴아픈 영상 일기로 담담하게 전하고 있습니다.

이 어린 생명의 재활을 위해서도 헌신하며...

폭발로 심하게 망가진 9살 소년. 그의 불굴의 정신은 사자의 심장이라는 별명을 얻고, 이라크 주재

공군 외과로 옮겨져 그를 살리기 위해 국제적 구호 지원으로 이어졌다. 시련을 이겨내는 동안

그의 아버지는 내내 아들 옆을 지키며 사랑의 손으로 쓰다듬었다.  

Saleh Khalaf, a 9-year-old Iraqi boy, was severely maimed by an explosion.

His indomitable spirit -- which earned Saleh the nickname Lion Heart -- moved Air Force

surgeons in Iraq to launch an international mercy mission to save him.

Throughout the ordeal Saleh's father, Raheem, stayed at the boy's side, ready with a

comforting touch like this.

아이를 살리기 위해 소년의 아버지는 두 딸과 임신한 아내를 이라크에 남겨두고 오클랜드 어린이

병원으로 왔다. 폭탄으로 배가 찢어지고, 오른 손 전체와 왼손 손가락 거의가 떨어져 나갔으며,

왼쪽 눈이 빠지고, 그의 형은 폭발로 사망했다.    

The mission to save Saleh brought him and his father to Children's Hospital Oakland,

leaving his pregnant mother and two younger sisters behind in Iraq. The explosion had

ripped open Saleh's abdomen, torn off his right hand and most fingers on his left, blown

out his left eye and killed his older brother.

회복 기간동안 부자는 어린이 병원 가족 요양소에 살고, 여기서 아버지는 무슬림 의식의 기도를

매일 올렸다. 샌프란시스코 Bay Area의 독지가들이 보낸 장난감과 동물 인형들이 보인다.

While Saleh was recovering, he and his father lived at the Children's Hospital Family

House, where Raheem spread out his rug for daily prayers required of Muslims.

Bay Area well-wishers sent Saleh toys and stuffed animals.

사고 후 10개월 동안 32번의 외과 수술 시행. 이제는 인공 눈을 보호할 수 있는 왼쪽 눈두덩 성형

을 위해 대기 중. 살레는 수술 처치와는 별도로 여러 달 동안 재활 및 심리 치료도 해야 한다.

In the 10 months after the explosion, Saleh would undergo 32 surgeries. Here he awaits

an operation to repair his left eyelid so that he can accommodate a prosthetic eye.

In addition to the operations, Saleh would need months of rehabilitation and emotional

therapy.

소년의 아버지는 대부분 아들 옆에 누워 잠을 재우고, 잠이 들면 의자로 빠져나와 잤다. 그는 사고

아직도 포탄으로 죽운 큰 아들 때문에 슬퍼하고 있으나 두 달이 지나도록 그의 형이 죽었다는

얘기를 하지 못했다.  

Raheem started most nights in bed with Saleh and then slipped off to a chair when Saleh

fell asleep. He was still grieving the death of his oldest son,Dia, killed when Saleh was

maimed. Two months after the incident, Raheem had not told Saleh his brother was dead. 

대개는 표정이 밝았으나 그의 일그러진 외모에 민감했다. 어느날 오후 다른 애들이 자기 모습을

빤히 쳐다보자 매우 화가 났다. 간호사들이 그를 달래기 위해 수성 그림 펜을 팔에 감아 그림을

그리게 하고 있다. 살레는 폭탄 떨어지는 그림을 그리고 있다.

Though usually upbeat, Saleh was sensitive about his appearance. One afternoon,

when he saw other children staring at him, Saleh became angry and upset. Nurses

sought to soothe him by taping a felt tip pen to this arm so he could draw pictures.

Saleh drew an airplane dropping bombs.

살레의 회복은 예상 외로 빨랐다. 어느날 밤 그를 지켜주는 수위와 복도에서 공놀이를 하고 있다.

간호원들이 억지로 침대로 대리고 갈 때까지...

Saleh's recovery went better than anyone expected. One night at Children's Hospital,

he and a custodian, Khaled Abdorabihe, played soccer in the hallway until a nurse

caught them and sent Saleh back to bed. 

회복 몇 개월이 지나자 병원 간부들이 마지못해 다른 환자를 위해 가족요양소로 가줄 것을 요청

했다. 샌프란시스코의 한 후원 부부가 오클랜드에서 마땅한 곳을 찾아 주겠다고 나섰고,

거쳐를 옮긴 후 새로 조립한 침대에서 좋아하고 있다.  

Months into Saleh's recovery, hospital officials reluctantly told Raheem that they would

need the Family House for other patients. A Bay Area couple -- Leslie and Daniel

Troutner-- came to the rescue, finding a place for Saleh and Raheem in Oakland.

병원 바깥 출입이 잦아지자 살레는 그의 흉터를 가리기 위해 선그라스를 썼다. 이번 야채가게

외출에서는 안경을 깜빡 잊고 나와 다른 손님들의 눈길을 받고 있다.  

As he ventured more often outside the hospital, Saleh took to wearing sunglasses to hide

his scars. On this trip to the grocery store, he forgot them and drew the stares of other

customers.

사람들의 눈길에 화가 난 살레는 가게를 뛰쳐나오고... 아버지는 쫓아 따라가 달래고 있으나

살레에게는 너무 힘겹다. 집 앞에서 땅바닥에 엎드려 흐느끼고 있는 아들, 아버지는 하릴없는 

모습으로 서 있다.  

Upset by the stares of strangers, Saleh ran from the store. Raheem chased him down

and tried to console him but it was too much for Saleh. In front of their apartment building,

he fell to the ground sobbing as Raheem stood helplessly above him.

가장 중요한 수술을 앞두고 살레는 이제 학교 수업을 시장했다. 살레가 얘기할 차례. 그는 이라크

에서 자라며 물고기 잡던 일이며 야생동물이 어떻게 돌아다닌다는 등의 애기를 들려 주고 있다.   

His major surgeries behind him, Saleh started taking classes at Park Day School.

When it was his turn in the storyteller's chair, Saleh riveted the other children with tales of

his life in Iraq. He talked about catching fish in the river near his house and how wild

animals roamed the neighborhood. 

살레는 공원에서 빨리 친구를 사귀었고, 거기서 친구들과 어깨동무를 하고 복도를 걸어가고 있다.

살레는 팔레스타인으로 미국에 이민 온 오스틴이라는 애와 특히 친하다.    

Saleh quickly made friends at Park, where he strolled through the hallway arm-in-arm

with Owen Clark (right) and Austin Bisharat. Saleh was especially close to Austin,

who is a Palestinian-American.

이제 아들이 병실에 혼자 있을 수 있게 되자 그의 아버지는 자신과 아들을 부양할 일자리기

필요했다. 병원 아들을 살린 그 병원의 수위로 채용돼 새벽 4시에 일을 시작하고 있다.

Now that he was living on his own, Raheem needed a job to support himself and Saleh.

He found work as a custodian at the hospital that helped save his son's life.

Raheem started his workday at 4 a.m.

미국에 온지 거의 1년, 살레와 아버지는 그의 남은 가족들이 삼촌의 도움을 받아 이라크에서

위험한 미국 입국 여행을 감행하여 수용시설 입주를 허가 받는다. 요르단으로 빠져나가기 직전.

Nearly a year after arriving in the United States, Saleh and Raheem were granted asylum,

as were the other members of their family -- mother Hadia, daughters Marwa and Zahra

and new baby Ali. Hadia's brother-in-law, Kareem, helped them make the perilous

journey out of Iraq. Here they are about to enter Jordan.

요르단의 안전지대로 들어온 후 안도. 아내는 딸이 승합차 안에서 잠든 사이 쉬고 있다. 이제 남은

건 모든 가족이 비자를 받아 미국으로 들어가는 것. 거기서 남편과 아들을 상봉하는 것.

Relieved after crossing the border into the safety of Jordan, Hadia relaxed as Marwa slept

in the front seat of a van. Now all that remained was to wait for visas and begin the

journey to America, where Hadia and the children would be reunited with Saleh and

Raheem.

요르단 암만에서 살레 어머니는 여권사진을 찍기 위해 가족을 사진관으로 데려가고...곧 아빠와

첫 상봉할 어린 애기는 얼굴을 가눈채 사진이 찍히도록 무릎에 앉혀 재롱을 떨게 하고 있다.   

In Amman, Jordan, Hadia took her family to a portrait studio to get their passport photos.

Ali the baby boy whom Raheem and Saleh would soon meet, was bounced on an

assistant's knee in order to keep him awake for the picture. 

샌프란시스코 국제공항에서 살레와 아버지는 1년여 만에 가족 상봉을 기다리느라 목이 빠지고…

아버지와 함께 가족 상봉을 고대해 왔던 살레는 “엄마다!” 하고 비명을 지른다. 아들은 엄마에게

선물할 월마트에서 산 반지를 꼭 쥐고 있다.

Saleh and Raheem caught sight of Hadia and the children at San Francisco International

Iirport for the first time in more than a year. "There she is!" Saleh squealed as he and his

father raced toward the long-awaited reunion. In his hand, Saleh held tight to a ring he'd

bought at Wal-Mart as a present for his mother. 
 

공항에서 아들 살레는 어린 동생을 안고 있는 엄마 품으로 뛰어든다. 엄마는 죽었다고 생각했던

아들을 품속에 꼭 껴 안았다. 뒤편에는 아버지가 그의 딸들을 안으려고 팔을 벌리고...   

Saleh rushed to hug his mother and his new baby brother, Ali, at San Francisco

International Airport. Hadia dropped to her knees and embraced the son she had last

seen thinking he was dying. Behind, Raheem opened his arms to his daughters,

Marwa and Zahra.

살레 가족이 같이 사는 오클랜드의 아파트는 이라크에서 전기도 잘 들어오지 않고 궁색하게 살던

그것과 비교과 안 된다.  도착한 그날 저녁, 가족 상봉이 너무 기뻐 춤을 추고 있다.

The apartment Raheem, Hadia and their children would share in Oakland was a far cry

 from the crumbling home with spotty electricity that they had shared in their small Iraqi

village. On the evening of their arrival, Raheem and Saleh were so happy to have their

family back that they danced for joy.

오클랜드 아파트에 안착이 되자 아내는 가족들을 위한 음식을 준비했다. 무엇보다 소중히 여기는

어린 딸을 무릎에 앉힌 채 남편은 아내가 수염을 깎아 없앤 모습이 우스꽝스럽다고 하자 장난스레

아내의 머리를 툭 치며 즐거워하고 있다. 

As they settled into their apartment in Oakland, Hadia prepared meals for the family.

Raheem, with daughter Marwa in her rightful place at the center of daddy's universe,

gave Hadia a playful nudge when she said he looked funny without his mustache.
