1. Current Market status in Brazil
□ Market size, Import Trend & Competitive trends
○ The market size for copper nickel tubes & pipes has seen an increase of 90% in quantity and 95% in value from 2012 to 2013 according to the importation figures from World Trade Atlas, shown on tables 1 & 2 below.
○ These products have been imported mainly from United Kingdom, Germany, Mexico and India; which have experienced a very large increase in their orders from Brazil in 2013 (table 2). - The average price per ㎏ for each country has shown a decrease since 2011 when South Korea is also present in the table at ranking 20th (tables 2 & 3).
○ This year (2014) has shown that South Korea has also started to offer better prices and therefore have their orders increased significantly, appearing at ranking 6th for the first trimester of 2014.
○ Main Competitors: - Nautic Steel: http://www.nautic.co.uk/ - KME: http://www.kme.com/de/produkte_und_maerkte - Multimetals: http://www.multimetals.in/co_ni_tubes.html - Admiralty Industries: http://www.admiraltyindustries.com/
○ Nautic Steel (from the United Kingdom) seems to have a strong presence in Brazil and they supply to Petrobras through a distribution agreement with Brazilian company Wconex. KME (from Germany) supplies through its distributor Special Steels.
2. Demand Trend & Market Forecast
□ Oil Exploration Offshore & Shipbuilding Demand
○ Recently Brazil has discovered large reserves of oil in deep-sea basins of the South-east coast. Because these reserves have been found under a large layer of salt in deep sea, it has been called pre-salt oil.
○ To explore these new found reserves of oil, the federal government has been tendering large sections of these basins in the open market. However the government stipulates that Petrobras must be one of the main partners of all winning consortiums.
□ Characteristics of local buyers & final customers
○ Petrobras is the final customer for most of the Oil & Gas projects in Brazil. They buy some equipment & materials directly or they contract EPC companies for some turn-key projects and ships. - In order to supply to Petrobras directly or indirectly, the supplier must go through the process of registering at Petrobras supplier portal, which includes presenting all the necessary documents and Quality Certificates (http://sites.petrobras.com.br/canalfornecedor/portugues/comocadastrar/comocadastrar.asp) and must acquire a Certificate of registration called CRCC.
○ Both Petrobras and EPC companies must comply with ANP (National Regulatory Agency) regulations stipulated by the Federal Government. It is important to note that these regulations require a certain amount of local content for each project.
○ Petrobras is a major international company that acts in various fields of OIL & Gas Exploration, Production, Refining, Distribution, etc. - Please see the table below for the overview figures of Petrobras today.
○ Due to the new pre-salt discoveries Petrobras has established ambitious targets for Exploration & Production on its Business plans. It aims to produce 4.2 million barrel of oil per day by 2020, which is almost double their current production today.
○ In order to achieve their production targets in the following years, Petrobras and its partners will require large quantities of Shipbuilding & Offshore equipment & materials, including copper nickel pipes and tubes.
○ Until 2020 it is forecasted that Petrobras will demand 81 production platforms and drilling rigs, 246 platform supply vessels and 72 oil tan, totaling 344 Offshore & shipping equipment. Please see table below for these figures and its expected values.
○ To build these there is a long list of equipment & supplies needed, of which 638,870 tons are expected for tubing & casings, please see table below.
□ Refineries & Petrochemical plants
○ Petrobras is also the main company in Brazil that owns and invests in Oil Refineries and Petro-Chemical plants. These sectors are also planned to receive large investments in the next few years to enable Petrobras to refine and utilize the crude oil it is expected to produce in the near future. Please see the table below for an overview of Petrobras planned investments in the downstream sector.
3. Tariff rate & Distribution Structure
□ Import Tariff
○ Certifications accepted: - ASTM - EEMUA
□ Major distribution channel
○ Exporter -> Distributor / Importer -> EPC / Final customer
○ The distributor usually also acts as a Commercial & Legal representative of the foreign company acquiring all the necessary documentation and Certification necessary for the importation and sales.
