Samsung Electronics and SK hynix will invest 800 trillion won ($519 billion) to establish a semiconductor complex in the country's southwestern region, as part of government-private sector plans to strengthen Korea's position as one of the world's leading semiconductor powerhouses amid a boom in artificial intelligence (AI) industries.

삼성전자와 SK하이닉스는 인공지능(AI) 산업의 급성장 속에서 한국을 세계적인 반도체 강국으로 발돋움시키기 위한 정부-민간 합동 계획의 일환으로, 한국 남서부 지역에 800조 원(약 5,190억 달러) 규모의 반도체 단지를 건설할 예정이다.

SK Group, GS Group and Naver will also spend 550 trillion won to set up AI data centers to increase the total capacity to 18.4 gigawatts by 2035.

SK그룹, GS그룹, 네이버 또한 550조 원을 투자해 AI 데이터센터를 구축하고, 2035년까지 총 용량을 18.4기가와트(GW)로 확대할 계획이다.

The government, Samsung Electronics, SK Group and other large businesses announced the massive investment plans Monday, as part of the government's three flagship megaprojects focusing on semiconductors, physical AI and AI data centers, designed to meet surging demand for AI infrastructure as the technology reshapes the global industrial landscape.

정부와 삼성전자, SK그룹 등 대기업들은 월요일, 반도체, 물리적 AI, AI 데이터센터에 초점을 맞춘 정부의 3대 핵심 사업의 일환으로 이러한 대규모 투자 계획을 발표했다. 이 사업들은 AI 기술이 세계 산업 지형을 재편함에 따라 급증하는 AI 인프라 수요에 대응하기 위해 추진된다.

The projects are also intended to promote high-tech investment across the country's southwestern, central and southeastern regions as part of a broader push for balanced regional development, while relevant plants and infrastructure are currently concentrated around the capital region, such as in southern Gyeonggi Province's Icheon, Pyeongtaek and Yongin.

이 프로젝트들은 또한 균형 잡힌 지역 개발을 위한 광범위한 노력의 일환으로 전국 남서부, 중부, 남동부 지역에 첨단 기술 투자를 촉진하는 것을 목표로 gks다. 현재 관련 공장과 인프라는 경기도 이천, 평택, 용인 등 수도권에 집중되어 있다.

“Today's AI race is not only a country-to-country competition but also a global battle across multiple fronts,” President Lee Jae Myung said during a public briefing at Cheong Wa Dae, in the presence of business leaders and ministers from corresponding sectors.

이재명 대통령은 청와대에서 열린 기업인 및 관련 부처 관계자들과의 공개 브리핑에서 "오늘날의 AI 경쟁은 국가 간 경쟁일 뿐만 아니라 여러 전선에서 벌어지는 글로벌 전쟁"이라고 말했다.

He explained that the competition extends far beyond AI models themselves to the semiconductors that power computing and inference, AI data centers that process enormous volumes of data, physical AI that brings AI into the real world and even foundational infrastructure, such as electricity and water, which makes these technologies possible.

그는 경쟁이 AI 모델 자체를 넘어 컴퓨팅과 추론을 구동하는 반도체, 방대한 양의 데이터를 처리하는 AI 데이터 센터, AI를 현실 세계에 구현하는 물리적 AI, 그리고 이러한 기술을 가능하게 하는 전기, 수도와 같은 기반 시설에 이르기까지 훨씬 더 광범위하다고 설명했다.

Calling the three priorities of semiconductors, physical AI and AI data centers the “three pillars of our next great leap” for Korea's AI ecosystem, Lee said, "The results of the megaprojects will determine Korea’s fate for the next 20 to 30 years.”

이재명 대통령은 반도체, 물리적 AI, AI 데이터 센터라는 세 가지 우선순위를 한국 AI 생태계의 "차세대 도약을 위한 세 가지 기둥"이라고 칭하며, "이러한 메가프로젝트의 결과가 향후 20~30년간 한국의 미래를 결정할 것"이라고 말했다.

As for semiconductors, a new production hub will be built in the southwestern region with an 800 trillion won investment from Samsung Electronics and SK hynix, each building two memory chip fabs, while the central region will become a semiconductor packaging hub and the southeastern regions will focus on materials, parts and equipment.

반도체 분야에서는 삼성전자와 SK하이닉스가 각각 2개의 메모리 칩 공장을 건설하며 800조 원을 투자해 서남부 지역에 새로운 생산 허브를 구축하고, 중부 지역은 반도체 패키징 허브, 동남부 지역은 소재, 부품, 장비 허브로 육성할 계획이다.

Samsung Electronics Executive Chairman Lee Jae-yong said Gwangju in the southwestern region is the leading candidate for its next semiconductor investment site.

삼성전자 이재용 회장은 차세대 반도체 투자 거점으로 남서부 지역인 광주를 유력 후보지로 꼽았다.

"As investment in our existing semiconductor hubs has accelerated, we need to move up the timeline for preparing a new production base," the Samsung Electronics chairman said, citing Gwangju's advantages in electricity, water supply, workforce availability and infrastructure incentives.

이 회장은 "기존 반도체 허브에 대한 투자가 가속화됨에 따라 새로운 생산 기지 준비 일정을 앞당겨야 한다"며 광주의 풍부한 전력, 용수 공급, 우수한 인력, 그리고 다양한 인프라 지원 혜택을 언급했다.

For advanced chip packaging, he said Samsung Electronics will concentrate investment in the central region, including South Chungcheong Province's Cheonan and Onyang, where it plans to expand production of high-bandwidth memory (HBM) chips that require state-of-the-art packaging technology.

또한, 첨단 칩 패키징 기술과 관련하여 삼성전자는 최첨단 패키징 기술이 필요한 고대역폭 메모리(HBM) 칩 생산 확대를 위해 충청남도 천안과 온양을 포함한 중부 지역에 투자를 집중할 계획이라고 밝혔다.

The government said it would help Samsung Electronics and SK hynix accelerate the ongoing construction of semiconductor clusters in Yongin and other sites throughout the capital region, in order to double memory chip production capacity within five years.

정부는 삼성전자와 SK하이닉스가 용인을 비롯한 수도권 지역에서 진행 중인 반도체 클러스터 건설을 가속화하여 5년 안에 메모리 칩 생산 능력을 두 배로 늘릴 수 있도록 지원할 것이라고 밝혔다.

Additionally, the government will invest more than 30 trillion won over 15 years in next-generation chips and establish a comprehensive support system involving government, industry and academia.

또한 정부는 차세대 반도체에 향후 15년간 30조 원 이상을 투자하고 정부, 산업, 학계가 참여하는 종합적인 지원 시스템을 구축할 예정이다.

For AI data centers, SK Group, GS Group and Naver will invest 550 trillion won. They aim to establish centers with 8.4 gigawatts of capacity in the initial phase, and expand it to 18.4 gigawatts by 2035.

SK그룹, GS그룹, 네이버는 AI 데이터센터에 550조 원을 투자할 예정이다. 초기 단계에서는 8.4기가와트(GW) 규모의 데이터센터를 구축하고 2035년까지 18.4GW로 확장하는 것을 목표로 한다.

Including the memory fabs and the data centers, SK Group Chairman Chey Tae-won said the group will invest a total of 1,100 trillion won.

Alongside the infrastructure buildout, the government will foster an AI data center ecosystem by supporting domestically developed AI chips, power and cooling solutions, and AI data center clusters with large-scale test beds.

정부는 인프라 구축과 더불어 국내 개발 AI 칩, 전력 및 냉각 솔루션, 대규모 테스트베드를 갖춘 AI 데이터센터 클러스터 지원을 통해 AI 데이터센터 생태계를 조성할 예정이다.

It also aims to strengthen cloud computing technologies and AI semiconductor capabilities to boost exports and expand public access to AI services.

또한 클라우드 컴퓨팅 기술과 AI 반도체 역량을 강화하여 수출을 확대하고 AI 서비스에 대한 대중 접근성을 높이는 것을 목표로 한다.

Concerning physical AI, Korea aims become one of the world's top three AI robot powers while positioning physical AI as a national strategic industry by 2030.

물리적 AI 분야에서는 2030년까지 세계 3대 AI 로봇 강국으로 도약하고 물리적 AI를 국가 전략 산업으로 육성하는 것을 목표로 한다.

The plan will accelerate AI use in manufacturing, nurture key technologies such as robot components, train skilled workers and establish regional mass production hubs led by private investment.

이 계획은 제조업 분야의 AI 활용을 가속화하고, 로봇 부품 등 핵심 기술을 육성하며, 숙련된 인력을 양성하고, 민간 투자를 주도하는 지역 양산 허브를 구축하는 것을 포함한다.

Over the next three years, the government aims to develop a world-class domestic physical AI foundation model and expand its use across manufacturing, health care, agriculture, safety and defense, with the goal of commercializing physical AI services and exporting full-stack AI platforms.

정부는 향후 3년간 세계적 수준의 국내 물리적 AI 기반 모델을 구축하고 이를 제조업, 의료, 농업, 안전 및 국방 분야로 확대 적용하여 물리적 AI 서비스를 상용화하고 풀스택 AI 플랫폼을 수출하는 것을 목표로 하고 있다.

The Samsung Electronics chief said the company will focus its investments in physical AI, including humanoid robots and AI data centers for internal use, in Gumi, North Gyeongsang Province.

삼성전자 최고경영자는 회사가 경상북도 구미에 휴머노이드 로봇과 사내용 AI 데이터센터를 포함한 물리적 AI 분야에 투자를 집중할 것이라고 밝혔다.
