Beijing Diocese renovates 'haunted' building Government grant turns unoccupied property into tourist attractionMarch 14, 2016Two 100-year-old vacant buildings owned by Beijing Diocese and believed by local residents to be haunted will be getting a facelift and reopen as a tourist attraction. The buildings have been unoccupied since 1949. Meng Qi, the office director of Beijing Catholic Diocese, said the Civil Affairs Bureau took over the property in 1949, and it was not returned to the diocese until 1995. Since that time, the diocese has not had funds to make any repairs. A recent grant from the government has given the diocese the opportunity to rebuild the French baroque-style buildings as a historical site and architectural attraction, slated for reopening for October. A rumored 1949 suicide in the building led to tales of a haunting. However, the diocese denies knowledge of any suicides there, reported The Beijinger. |
