05/03/1995: Pulled over in a routine traffic stop along with team mate Art Long, Long was apparently annoyed at something, and was arrested for punching the police horse 4 times. That isn't related to Fortson much, I just thought it was funny. In court, Long claimed that he was merely petting the horse. Fortson was arrested too for disorderly conduct whilst intoxicated. Both were eventually acquitted.
Numerous: Despite th eintention for this section to focus on off-the-court-stuff, we might as well mention whilst here that Fortson has a list of fines and suspensions so long, we dare not even start listing them. It's fair to say that this man has some "bad jib". |

Sued the NBA claiming that the suspension was racially motivated. Lost.
Training camp 1999: Missed the first week of training camp. Allegedly sending a very unsbutle message to the team by doing so. As his explanation, Sprewell said that he missed camp as he was driving, not flying, acorss the entire country, because he wasnted his Mercedes to be in New York when he was. Fined.
December 1999: Whilst in a civil trial concerning a road traffic accident Sprewell admits to causing, he was accused of talking to the jury, which is not allowed. Motion for a new trial was rejected. February 2003: Arrested for driving with a suspended license. His licensed was suspended after he failed to report to a court summons for a minor citation of failing to signal. Fined and released.
March 2003: Had a case brought against him concerning child support of a 14 year old girl. Whilst there is no official documentation saying that he is the child's father, Sprewell admits that he is. After getting his first NBA contract in 1993, Sprewell has given $2,000 every month to the child's mother as child support. Now earning many millions a year, the case called for Sprewell to pay 17% of his salary, which was about $2 million annually. |

Summer 2000: Unintentionally invented the Joe Smith rule. Smith along with Timberwolves owner Glen Taylor and GM Kevin McHale signed a document, which they somewhat foolishly wrote down, agreeing to a future 7 year $86 million contract between Smith and the team, a pretty serious violation of the Collective Bargaining Agreement. The franchise was fined $3.5 million and had its first round draft picks for the next 5 years removed (2 were re-instated a while later for good behaviour). Smith's current contract with the Timberwolves was voided, and the league reserved the right to void any future contracts between he and the Wolves. As it turns out, Smith played one season in Pistons, and then re-signed with the Timberwolves at the earliest possible opportunity, which the league did not stop. |
