When Paul says “If you are a thief, quit stealing. Instead, use your hands for good hard work, and then give generously to others in need” in verse 28, he’s saying it because he knows the nature of stealing. Why do people steal? It’s because they want to have money without working for it. It means to work hard – work hard and do good. So, you work then you earn money. With that money, do good deeds. What are good deeds? Helping the poor.
Helping the poor does not mean helping them with the amount you can throw away. It is about helping the poor with the money I had earned by working hard and not spend on something I wanted to buy.
This is much easier said than done. We must “train” ourselves to do good deeds before the time comes when we are not able to make money (or have a job). For those in your 40s and 50s, if you don’t start doing this now, you won’t be able to do anything later. So before you stop making money, do good deeds with the money you are making as Maria poured expensive oil. There are people in need inside the church and outside the church.
