노벨문학상은 매년 전 세계에서 오직 한 명만이 받을 수 있는 상이다. 그래서 그만큼 영광도 크다.
오늘 문득, 그 위대한 상을 받은 작가의 작품 중에 내가 읽은 책은 과연 몇 권이나 될까?
하는 생각이 들었다. 그래서 역대 노벨상 수상자와 그들의 주요 작품들을 검토해 보았다.

이토록 많은 작품 중에 내가 읽은 것은 겨우 10여 권에 불과하다는 사실에 실망했다.
그러나 이 리스트에 있는 책들을 한 권씩 한 권씩 가능하면 원서로 읽어가는 것을 목표로 삼으리라!
바라건대 언젠가는 이 리스트에 우리나라 작가의 이름도 등재되는 날이 왔으면 좋겠다.
우리 문학이 담고 있는 한글의 맛을, 그 감성을, 그 섬세함을 과연 번역이 얼마나 커버해 줄 수 있을지?
영문학도로서 그 점을 생각하면 정말 안타깝기 그지 없지만 말이다.
