Lunchbox

Now, everyone, let’s eat lunch

As the teacher finishes
Lids open here and there
A soft clatter across the room.

Me, too
I take my lunchbox from my desk
And lift the lid.

Ah, today again
Only a few sweet potatoes

What if the teacher sees or my friends?

I hide them under the desk
Put them into my mouth
Without chewing

Without even peeling.

Thud—
Thud—

A sudden blast
Shakes the windows

Dynamite, from the roadwork nearby
The same sound
We’ve heard these past few days.

I think of my mother working there

Did she bring even a few sweet potatoes

With her today?

I will save some

And on my way home
I’ll stop by the site
And give them to her.

The sound of eating
The click of chopsticks
Laughter
Voices filling the room

자, 점심 먹도록 해요.

선생님 말씀 마치자

여기저기

도시락 뚜껑 여는 소리

나도

책상 속에서 도시락을 꺼내

뚜껑을 연다.

아, 오늘도

고구마 몇 개

선생님이나 다른 친구들이 보면 어쩌지

책상 밑에 감추어

껍질도 까지 않은 채

입안에 넣어 씹지도 않고 넘긴다.

쿵―

쿵―

갑자기 유리창이 흔들리도록

큰 소리가 난다.

요 며칠 사이

이따끔 들리는

도로 공사장의

다이너마이트 터뜨리는 소리

공사장에 일하러 가신 어머니

오늘은

고구마라도 싸 가지고 가셨을까.

고구마 몇 개 남겼다가

집으로 가는 길에

공사장에 들러

갖다 드릴까.

밥 먹는 소리

젓가락 소리

웃는 소리

재조갈재조갈 얘기하는 소리.
