After consecutive road losses to two of the top teams in the Western Conference, a home matchup against the stumbling Memphis Grizzlies might be just what the Denver Nuggets need to resume their playoff push.
On Wednesday, the Nuggets look to continue their home dominance over the Grizzlies, who are looking to avoid losing their 16th straight on the road.
Last week, Denver (37-26) came up with big wins at home over Phoenix and San Antonio, but followed those up with a 132-105 loss at Utah on Saturday and a 107-103 loss to the Spurs on Monday.
The Nuggets have been sliding down the West standings after being just 1 1/2 games out of first place in the Northwest Division on Feb. 19. Denver has lost six of its last 10 to fall four games behind the Northwest-leading Jazz, and is also 2 1/2 games behind Golden State for the final playoff spot in the West.
"We have 19 playoff games left,'' said Nuggets coach George Karl, referring to Denver's push to make the postseason. "This is an incredible year. This is such a unique season. ... We're moving in the right direction. We're doing some good things.''
The Nuggets have been doing plenty of good things at the Pepsi Center lately, where they've won three straight by an average of 10.7 points, and are 13-2 in Denver since Jan. 3.
Allen Iverson is averaging 32.7 points on 55.6 percent shooting and 9.0 assists during the home winning streak, while Carmelo Anthony is averaging 28.3 points and 11.7 rebounds in those contests.
The Nuggets have been superb against the Grizzlies in Denver, going 21-3 all-time there. The Nuggets' 108-96 loss to Memphis on Nov. 28, 2006, snapped a 17-game home winning streak over the franchise.
The Grizzlies (15-48), meanwhile, have lost 15 straight road games since a win at Indiana on Jan. 2. This is Memphis' longest road losing streak since also dropping 15 in a row during the 2000-01 season. It has not lost 16 consecutive games away from home since losing the final 23 road games of the 1998-99 season when the club was in Vancouver - the franchise's worst road skid.
On Tuesday, the Grizzlies lost 132-111 at Phoenix, where they trailed by as many as 39 in the third quarter.
In Denver's first meeting against the Grizzlies on Jan. 30, Iverson had 32 points and 12 assists in the Nuggets' 106-102 win in Memphis.
Iverson injured his right ring finger Friday against the Spurs, and an X-ray on Monday revealed a non-displaced fracture in the finger.
"The finger was sore and throbbing," the nine-time All-Star said after Monday's game. "I was actually hoping to get hit on it to see how it would react and never really did get to see how it would respond. I just had to deal with it being broken."
Iverson's finger didn't appear to be bothering him too much, though, as he finished with a game-high 28 points on 9-of-22 shooting against San Antonio.
Anthony, who had 18 points on Monday, missed the win over the Grizzlies in January with a sprained left ankle. The two-time All-Star is averaging 32.3 points in his last six games against Memphis.
The Grizzlies have lost 17 of their last 19 overall as another disappointing season winds down.
"We're going through some rebuilding times right now and our concentration is suffering because it's difficult with 20 games to go, 19 now, to really have something hard to play for,'' Memphis coach Marc Iavaroni said.
Rudy Gay, who finished with 20 points and eight rebounds on Tuesday, had 30 and 10, respectively, against the Nuggets in January.
The Grizzles, who are 4-26 on the road, wrap up their three-game road trip Saturday at Golden State.
