Unit 2 Oxygen-Producing Plants (산소를 배출하는 식물)
When plants use photosynthesis to make food, they produce waste.
This waste is the gas oxygen, which is extremely useful to other living things.
Of course, not all plants emit the same amount of oxygen.
Most people think forests are responsible for all oxygen production.
In reality, oceans actually produce a large amount of the atmosphere’s oxygen.
About half of the oxygen in Earth’s atmosphere is produced by ocean-dwelling plants.
These tiny creatures are called phytoplankton, or photosynthetic plankton.
They obtain carbon dioxide from deep ocean fossil material.
They process the carbon dioxide and then release oxygen into the air.
Rainforests are also responsible for a large amount of oxygen production.
Rainforests around the world take up large areas and contain dense vegetation.
As a result, they produce a large amount of oxygen.
In fact, the Amazon Rainforest alone produces about twenty percent of Earth’s oxygen.
Both large and small organisms are responsible for keeping Earth’s air breathable.
In tomorrow’s class, we will brainstorm ways in which we can protect these oxygen-producing organisms.
