Two Poems That Clear the Soul

I

As I walk along the field path,
I see purple heart blooming by the ditch.
Whenever I see a day flower,
I wonder who first gave it that name.

Who could it be?

As I walk along the mountain trail,
I see dianthus blooming by the path.
Whenever I see a rainbow pink flower,
I wonder who first gave it that name.

Who could it be?

II

First-graders walk in a wobbly line across the playground
crooked, crooked
Counting one, two, three, four
Step after step.

A flock of sparrows follows behind
chirp chirp, chirp chirp
As if they, too, are counting
Each small back in line.

In March

A rural school yard

A march

Resounding with hope.

도랑 가로 달개비꽃 피어 있지요

달개비꽃 볼 때마다

달개비란 이름 맨 처음 붙인 사람

궁금하지요

산길을 걷다 보면

길섶으로 패랭이꽃 피어 있지요

패랭이꽃 볼 때마다

패랭이란 이름 맨 처음 붙인 사람

운동장에서

삐뚤빼뚤 줄지어

하낫 둘, 셋 넷

번호 붙여 가며

걸어갑니다.

참새들도 여럿

참새의 말로

아이들 뒤를 따라

짹짹, 짹짹

걸어갑니다.
