In chapter seven Lord Krishna
gives concrete knowledge of the absolute reality
as well as the opulence of divinity.
He describes His illusory energy in the material existence called Maya
and declares how extremely difficult it is to surmount it.
He also describes the four types of people
attracted to divinity and the four types of people
who are opposed to divinity.
In conclusion He reveals
that one in spiritual intelligence takes exclusive refuge of the Lord
without reservation in devotional service.
Thus this chapter is entitled: Knowledge of the Ultimate Truth.


7-01
The Supreme Lord said:
O Arjuna, listen how you shall know Me completely without any doubt,
with your mind absorbed in Me,
taking refuge in Me, and performing yogic practices.
거룩한 주님께서 말씀하시기를
"오 아르쥬나여, 어떻게 하면 네 마음을 바쳐 나와 하나가 되게 함으로써,
나를 피신처로 삼아 구도행(求道行, yogic practices)들을 완수하여,
아무런 의심 없이 나를 충실하게 알 수 있게 될 것인지에 대해 들어라."

The Supreme Personality of Godhead said: Now hear, O son of Pritha,
how by practicing yoga in full consciousness of Me,
with mind attached to Me, you can know Me in full, free from doubt.

O Arjuna, hear how you shall without doubt know Me fully,
with the mind intent on Me, practising Yoga and taking refuge in Me!

COMMENTARY:
If you sing the glories and attributes of the Lord,
you will develop love for Him
and then your mind will be ever fixed on Him.
Intense love for the Lord is real devotion.
With this you must surely get full knowledge of the Self.

Krishna. Learn now, dear Prince! how, if thy soul be set
Ever on Me- still exercising Yog,
Still making Me thy Refuge- thou shalt come
Most surely unto perfect hold of Me.

 with mind attached to Me,
you can know Me in full, free from doubt.

I shall fully explain to you the Self-knowledge
together with Self-realization
after knowing that nothing more remains to be known in this world.
이제 나는 너에게 '진정한 나(眞我)를 깨닫는 법'과 더불어
'진정한 나란 무엇인가에 대한 지혜'를 모두 다 설명해 주리라.
이것을 알고 나면 이 세상에서 더 이상 알아야 할 것은 남지 않느니라.

I shall now declare unto you in full this knowledge,
both phenomenal and numinous.
This being known, nothing further shall remain for you to know.

I shall declare to thee in full this knowledge
combined with direct realisation,
after knowing which nothing more here remains to be known.

I will declare to thee that utmost lore,
Whole and particular, which, when thou knowest,
Leaveth no more to know here in this world.

Scarcely one out of thousands of persons
strives for perfection of Self-realization.
Scarcely any one of the striving,
or even the perfected persons, truly understands Me.
'진정한 나에 대한 깨달음'을 성취하기를 갈망하는 사람은
천 명에 한 명도 찾아보기가 힘드느니라.
더구나 그렇게 갈망하는 사람들 중에서도
나, '크리슈나'를 진정으로 이해하는,
'완벽해진 사람들(眞人)'이란 더더욱 찾아보기 힘드느니라.

Out of many thousands among men, one may endeavor for perfection,
and of those who have achieved perfection, hardly one knows Me in truth.

Among thousands of men, one perchance strives for perfection;
even among those successful strivers,
only one perchance knows Me in essence.

The mind, intellect, ego, ether, air, fire, water, and earth
are the eight-fold transformation of My Prakriti.(See also 13.05)
나의 '프라크리티(自性, 本質)'는
변화된 여덟 가지의 모습으로 이루어져 있으니,
그것은 마음과 이성(理性), 자아 의식(ego)과 에테르(氣),
공기와 불과 물과 흙이 바로 그것이니라.(13장5절을 참조하라)

(That which creates diversity,
and all that can be seen or known is called Prakriti. Prakriti is
also the material cause or the material out of which everything is made.
Prakriti is the original source of the material world consisting of three Gunas,
and eight basic elements out of which everything in this universe
has evolved according to Saamkhya doctrine.
Prakriti is also referred to as Asat, perishable, body, matter, nature,
material nature, Maya, Mahat Brahma, field, creation, and manifest state.)
차별성을 일으키는 것,
볼 수 있는 것, 알려져 있는 모든 것을 '프라크리티'라고 부른다.
'프라크리티'는 물질의 원인인 동시에
모든 것이 물질화되어 만들어져 나오는 곳이기도 하다.
상키야 학설에 따르면 '프라크리티'는
자연의 세 가지 내적 속성(Guna)들에 의해 지탱되는
물질 세계의 최초의 근원이기도 하고,
이 우주 속에 있는 모든 것들이 나온
8가지 기본요소들이 발원한 근원이라는 결론이 도출된다.
또한 '프라크리티'는 참이 아닌 것(Sat), 사멸하는 것, 몸, 물질, 성질,
물질적 자아, 환상의 공간(Maya), 공간(場), 나(我)라는 의식, 창조물,
그리고 정의할 수 있는 상태에 대한 언급이기도 하다.

프라크리티(Prakriti) : 자연 물질의 본성 또는 자성(自性)
구나스(Gunas) : 만물과 사람의 여러 가지 성품을 말하는 것으로
한자로는 성(性) 영어로는 Nature 또는 Mood로 번역된다.
이 구나스는 착한 바탕(사트바 sattva) 화를 내는 바탕(라자스 rajas),
게으른 바탕(타마스 tamas)이 함께 존재하는 것으로
이것을 세 가지 바탕(三性)이라 한다.

Jnana-yoga is also called Saamkhya-yoga, Samnyasa-yoga,
and yoga of knowledge.
A Jnana-yogi does not consider oneself the doer of any action,
but only an instrument in the hands of divine for His use.
The word Jnana means metaphysical or transcendental knowledge.)
'즈나나 요가'는 또 다른 말로 상키야 요가, 산야사 요가
그리고 지혜의 요가라고도 불리워진다.
'즈나나 요가'는 자기자신을 어떤 행동의 행위자로 여기지 않고
그 분의 의지에 따른 신성한 목적을 위한 도구에 불과하다고 생각하는 것이다.
'즈나나'라는 말은 형이상학적, 초자연적 지식이란 뜻이다.

-- all together these eight constitute My separated material energies.
Earth, water, fire, air, ether, mind, intellect and egoism
Thus is My Nature divided eight-fold.

This Prakriti is My lower energy.
My other higher energy is the Purusha
by which this entire universe is sustained, O Arjuna. 
오 아르쥬나여, 이 '프라크리티(小我,自性)'는 나의 낮은 에너지이니라.
그리고 나의 다른 높은 에너지인 '푸루샤(眞我,道,大我,聖靈)'는
이 전체 우주를 지탱하고 있느니라.

(Purusha is the consciousness
that observes, witnesses, watches, and supervises Prakrti.
It is the spiritual energy or the efficient cause of the universe.
This is also referred to as Sat, imperishable, Atma,
consciousness, spirit, self, soul, energy, field knower, creator,
and the un-manifest state.
Prakriti and Purusha are not two independent identities
but the two aspects of Brahman, the Absolute Reality.)
'푸루샤(眞我)'는 주시자, 목격자, 보는 자인 자각 의식이며
그리고 '프라크리티(小我)' 의 감독자이기도 하다.
이것은 영적인 에너지 또는 우주의 실제적인 기인(起因)이다.
이것은 또한 참인 것(Sat), 불멸의 것, 진아(Atama), 의식, 정신,
자아, 영혼, 에너지(氣), 공간(場)을 인식하는 나(我), 창조자
그리고 정의할 수 없는 상태에 대한 언급이기도 하다.
프라크리티와 푸루샤는 따로 독립된 개성을 가진 실체가 아니라
절대적 실체인 '스스로 존재하시는 분(Brahman)'의 두 가지 측면일 뿐이다.

Besides these, O mighty-armed Arjuna,
there is another, superior energy of Mine,
which comprises the living entities
who are exploiting the resources of this material, inferior nature.

This is the inferior Prakriti, O mighty-armed (Arjuna)!
Know thou as different from it My higher Prakriti (Nature),
the very life-element by which this world is upheld.

Know that all creatures have evolved from this twofold energy,
and Brahman is the origin
as well as the dissolution of the entire universe. (See also 13.26)
모든 만물은 이 두 겹의 에너지로부터 펼쳐져 나왔고,
'브라만'은 이 전체 우주의 근원이면서 만물이 녹아드는 끝이니라.

All created beings have their source in these two natures.
Of all that is material and all that is spiritual in this world,
know for certain that I am both the origin and the dissolution.

Know that these two (My higher and lower Natures)
are the womb of all beings.
So, I am the source and dissolution of the whole universe.

O Arjuna, there is nothing higher than Brahman.
Everything in the universe is strung on Brahman
like jewels on the thread of a necklace. 
오 아르쥬나여, 브라만보다 더 높은 것은 없느니라.
우주의 모든 것들은 마치 목걸이 실에 꿰인 보석들처럼
스스로 존재하시는 분(Brahman)에 줄지어 매달려 있느니라.

O conqueror of wealth, there is no truth superior to Me.
Everything rests upon Me, as pearls are strung on a thread.
오, 부(富)의 정복자여, '나'보다 더 높은 것은 진정 없느니라.
세상 만물은 실에 꿰인 진주들처럼 나에게 의지하고 있느니라.

There is nothing whatsoever higher than Me,
O Arjuna! All this is strung on Me as clusters of gems on a string.

COMMENTARY:
There is no other cause of the universe but Me.
I alone am the cause of the universe.
나를 제외하고는 그 어떤 우주의 원인이 없다.
오직 나만이 우주의 원인이다.

O Arjuna, I am the sapidity in the water,
I am the radiance in the sun and the moon,
the sacred syllable OM in all the Vedas,
the sound in the ether, and the manhood in men.
오 '아르쥬나'여, 나는 물의 맛이며, 해와 달의 빛이며
모든 경전 주문 속에 들어있는 성스러운 소리인 '옴(OM)'이며,
진공 속에서 울려 퍼지는 소리이며
인간 속에 들어있는 인간다운 성품(本性)이니라.

O son of Kunti, I am the taste of water,
the light of the sun and the moon,
the syllable om in the Vedic mantras;
I am the sound in ether and ability in man.

I am the sapidity in water, O Arjuna!
I am the light in the moon and the sun;
I am the syllable Om in all the Vedas,
sound in ether, and virility in men.

I am the sweet fragrance in the earth.
I am the heat in the fire, the life in all living beings,
and the austerity in the ascetics.
나는 대지의 달콤한 향기이니라.
나는 불의 열기이며,
모든 살아있는 존재들 속에 깃들어 있는 생명이며,
구도수행자들 참회이니라.

I am the original fragrance of the earth, and I am the heat in fire.
I am the life of all that lives, and I am the penances of all ascetics.

I am the sweet fragrance in earth and the brilliance in fire,
the life in all beings; and I am austerity in ascetics.

O Arjuna, know Me to be the eternal seed of all creatures.
I am the intelligence of the intelligent, and the brilliance of the brilliant.

오 아르쥬나여,
너는 내가 모든 창조물들의 근원인 영원한 씨앗임을 알아야 하리라.
나는 지혜 중의 지혜이며 빛 중에서도 가장 눈부신 빛이니라.

O son of Prtha, know that I am the original seed of all existences,
the intelligence of the intelligent, and the prowess of all powerful men.

I am the strength, that is devoid of lust and attachment, of the strong.
I am the lust (or Kaama) in human beings
that is in accord with Dharma (for procreation), O Arjuna.
오 아르쥬나여, 나는 강한 것 중에서 가장 강하며
육체에 대한 욕망과 집착으로부터는 벗어나 있느니라.
그리고 모든 존재들 속에서는 자연의 법칙에 응하여
생식의 욕망으로 작용하지만 그렇다하더라도 진리에 어긋나지는 않느니라.

I am the strength of the strong, devoid of passion and desire.
I am sex life which is not contrary to religious principles,
O lord of the Bharatas [Arjuna].

Of the strong, I am the strength devoid of desire and attachment,
and in (all) beings, I am the desire unopposed to Dharma, O Arjuna!

Know that the three Gunas, Saattvika, Raajasika, and Taamasika,
also emanate from Me. I am not in (or dependent on) the Gunas,
but the Gunas are in (or dependent on) Me. (See also 9.04 and 9.05) 
또한 만물이 지닌 세 가지 바탕 성품(Gunas)인
착한 성품(Sattva)과 활동성(Rajas)과 수용성(Tamas)
또한 나로부터 방사(放射)되어 나옴을 알아야 하리라.
나는 그 바탕 성품들 속에 있지도 의지하지도 않느니라.
하지만 만물의 바탕 성품은 나에게 의지하느니라. (9장4절과 9장 5절을 참조하라)

Know that all states of being
-- be they of goodness, passion or ignorance --
are manifested by My energy.
I am, in one sense, everything, but I am independent.
I am not under the modes of material nature,
for they, on the contrary, are within Me.

Whatever being (and objects) that are pure,
active and inert, know that they proceed from Me.
They are in Me, yet I am not in them.

Human beings are deluded by these three Gunas of nature;
therefore, they do not know Me
who is above these Gunas and eternal. 
인간은 이 세 가지 근본바탕 성품에 의해 미혹(迷惑)되어 있느니라.
그래서 인간들은 이런 세 가지 근본바탕 성품과 영원을 넘어
존재하고 있는 나에 대해 알지 못하고 있는 것이니라.

Deluded by the three modes [goodness, passion and ignorance],
the whole world does not know Me,
who am above the modes and inexhaustible.
Deluded by these Natures (states or things)
composed of the three qualities of Nature,
all this world does not know Me as distinct from them and immutable.

My divine Maya consisting of three Gunas or states of mind
is difficult to overcome.
Only they who surrender unto Me cross over this Maya.

세 가지 바탕 성품 혹은 마음의 상태로 이루어져 있는
나의 신성한 무명(無明,Maya)은 넘어서기가 어려우니라.
그러므로 오직 나를 믿고 나에게 온전히 귀의하는 사람만이
이 무명의 바다를 건널 수가 있느니라.(14.26절 15.19절 18.66절을 참조하라)

This divine energy of Mine,
consisting of the three modes of material nature, is difficult to overcome.
But those who have surrendered unto Me can easily cross beyond it.

Verily this divine illusion of Mine made up of the qualities (of Nature)
is difficult to cross over;
those who take refuge in Me alone cross over this illusion.

The evil doers, the ignorant, the lowest persons
who are attached to demonic nature,
and whose intellect has been taken away by Maya
do not worship or seek Me. 
악한 성품에 물든 무지하고 비천한 자들
악을 행하는 무리들
마야에 사로잡혀 자신의 지혜를 빼앗긴 자들은
나를 경배하지도 찾지도 않느니라.

Those miscreants who are grossly foolish,
who are lowest among mankind,
whose knowledge is stolen by illusion,
and who partake of the atheistic nature of demons
do not surrender unto Me.
어리석음에 완전히 물들어 버린 자들,
인간 중에서 가장 비열한 자들,
마야의 환상에 사로잡혀 자신의 지혜를 잃어버린 자들,
그리고 악마들의 무신론적 성품에 동조하는 자들과 같은
믿음이 없는 무리들은 결코 나에게로 귀의할 수 없느니라.

The evil-doers and the deluded,
who are the lowest of men, do not seek Me;
they whose knowledge is destroyed
by illusion follow the ways of demons.
