The 24th Sunday in Ordinary Time in 2008(year A)
It's the will of God that everyone who believes in him may have eternal life in the Son of Man. The way to have eternal life is through the Son of Man who was lifted up. But, the place he was lifted up is not a terrifically high and gorgeous place but the miserable place he should be hung on the cross. The Cross is lifted up high, but Jesus Christ hanging on the cross goes down to the lowest place.
The Cross is lifted up high to show his attitude of giving people eternal life with the humblest figure in the world. The Cross was surely a symbol of disgrace and stupidity, but through Jesus it was changed to the symbol of salvation. The Cross tells us that salvation can be achieved at the lowest place, not at the high place, gorgeously.
And God lets us know that the reason he sent us his son in the world through the Cross is not to judge the world but to make the world saved through his son. If he was going to judge the world, Jesus didn't have to be born at a manger and bear his Cross. He could come to us dignifiedly with the gorgeous and omnipotent figure and divide and govern the people.
The Cross is the one that shows us the way Jesus chose to save us and also the one Jesus shows for himself as the way we should follow. The way of Jesus was the way of stupidity and disgrace and our ways should be same with his way.
