What is the difference between the NIV, NASB, NRSV, ESV and KJV Bible translations?

The KJV was translated in 1611. It was the standard English translation for over 300 years. The problem is that the English language has changed since the time of Shakespeare. “Charitiy” does not mean the general term “love” today.

The NASB is the most literal, word for word, translation. It is a good study Bible. The NIV is the best selling Englsih translation in the world. It is more of a thought for thought translation. It is written so a Middle School student can read and study it.

The new ESV translation tried to find a middle path between the NIV and NASB as being literal and thought for thought. I don’t know much about the

NRSV but the recently retired pastor of my church used this version. Some conservative evangelicals and fundamentalists consider the RSV a more “liberal” Englsih version because of some of the words were translated so as to not offend mainline churches.

I like to read the NLT. It gives the reader a fresh translation of the Bible yet is still near to the meaning of the original languages.

I use the NIV, NASB and ESV when I study the Bible.
