내년 1월부터는 기초생활수급자 가운데 연락이 끊긴 가족 때문에 정부의 의료비 지원을 제대로 받지 못하는 경우가 없어진다.

보건복지부는 9일 열린 제3차 중앙의료급여심의위원회에서 ‘의료급여 부양비 제도’를 폐지하기로 결정했다고 밝혔다. 이 제도는 기초생활수급자라도 일정 소득 이상의 가족이 있으면, 이 가족에게서 부양비를 받는 것으로 간주해 정부의 의료비 지원을 제한하도록 하는 내용이었다. 하지만 그동안 기초생활수급자 중 상당수가 실제론 가족과 연락이 끊기거나 경제적 지원을 받지 않고 있다는 문제점이 계속 제기되면서, 이 제도가 도입된 지 26년 만에 전격 없애기로 한 것이다. 이에 따라 실제로 받지 않고 있는 부양비 때문에 의료비 지원 대상에서 제외됐던 저소득층이 내년부터 제대로 정부 지원을 받을 수 있게 될 전망이다.
