그가 제 처소에 머물게 되리라 (슥 5: 1~11) It shall be set there upon her own base.

날아가는 두루마리와 에바의 환상은 8가지 스가랴의 환상중 6,7번째 입니다. 날으는 두루마리의 크기는 20x10규빗입니다. 9x4.56m입니다. 육교의 높이가 대략 4.5m라고 합니다. 육교의 폭과 높이정도 크기의 두루마리가 하늘을 날고있는 그림입니다.

그리고 그 내용은 온 땅위에 내리는 저주라고 합니다. 바울은 로마서에서 율법의 주된 용도를 정죄라고 합니다. 어겼을 때 주어지는 징벌적 배상을 통해 죄를 방지하고 범한 자를 벌하는 방식입니다. 그리고 주된 2가지 죄를 제시하는데 도둑질과 여호와의 이름의 도용입니다.

도둑질은 에바의 축소와도 관련됩니다. 에바는 도량형으로 1/10호멜이며 22l정도의 부피라고 합니다. 20kg 쌀 한포대 정도 양입니다. 당시에는 곡물의 거래시에 에바라고 불리는 바구니를 사용하는데 이 바구니를 작게 만들어 양을 속이는 편법이 빈번했던 것 같습니다. 양을 속이는 방법은 전형적인 축재방법이며 하나님의 이름으로 일컫는 백성에게 합당하지 않은 일입니다. 일관된 약속으로서의 도량형을 속이는 것은 나라의 기초질서를 어지럽히는 범죄행위입니다. 그리고 그 속에는 탐욕이 도사리고 있습니다. 탐욕은 자신의 이익을 위해 하나님의 이름을 부끄럽게하는 일입니다.

그리고 에바속에 한 여인을 넣고 납조각으로 덮고 시날 땅으로 천사들이 운반해 갑니다. 시날은 바벨론 땅이며 한 때 바벨탑이 지어졌던 곳입니다. 곧 세상이며 죄악의 중심지인 것입니다. 롯이 아브라함을 떠나 소돔과 고모라 땅으로 이주한 뒤 언약을 갱신하신 것처럼, 여인으로 상징되는 악의 근원을 시날로 보냄으로 이스라엘의 거룩을 보호하시려는 하나님의 계획이 엿보입니다.

그리고 거대한 두루마리를 파수군으로 하늘에 띄워놓음으로 죄악을 시도하고자 하는 마음을 감히 갖지 못하게 하십니다. 명백한 저주의 깃발이 하늘에서 감시하고 계시다는 것입니다. 하늘 끝에서 땅끝까지 감찰하시는 하나님의 일곱 영 곧 일곱 눈이 그의 백성을 보호하시며 지키신다는 것입니다.


저주의 글들은 보호의 표시입니다. 경찰력이 범죄자들에게는 위협이지만 시민들에게는 안전을 제공하듯이, 하나님의 감찰하심은 그를 신뢰하는 자들에게 보호와 돌보심의 의미를 일깨워줍니다.

여인은 두로의 멸망과 바벨론의 멸망을 상기시킵니다. 성도들의 피에 취한 바벨론의 음녀가 물에 빠지듯이 그 세력은 영영히 사라지고 그 영향력을 상실할 것입니다. 대적의 멸망은 그의 백성의 평안이며 하나님의 통치의 완성입니다.

오늘도 우리를 보호하시고 살피시며 정도에서 벗어나지 않도록 감찰하시는 하나님의 눈길아래 우리는 평안과 감사의 노래를 올려드립니다. 죄악으로 향하는 나의 마음이 하나님의 불꽃같은 눈 앞에서 하늘길로만 향하도록 지키시고 인도하여 주시길 간구합니다.

The Flying Scroll and the Woman in the Ephah: A Reflection on Zechariah’s Sixth and Seventh Visions

Among the eight night visions of the prophet Zechariah, the sixth and seventh stand out with striking imagery and profound spiritual insight. The sixth vision reveals a flying scroll—measuring twenty by ten cubits, or roughly 9 by 4.5 meters, the size of a pedestrian overpass—soaring through the sky like a divine banner. This scroll bears a solemn message: a curse that goes out over the whole land.

The scroll’s contents speak of judgment, echoing the Apostle Paul’s teaching in Romans that the Law’s primary function is to expose sin. It does so not merely to condemn, but to restrain evil and uphold justice through retribution. Two sins are singled out: theft and the misuse of the Lord’s name.

Theft, in this context, connects directly to the seventh vision—the woman in the ephah. The ephah, a unit of volume equal to one-tenth of a homer (about 22 liters, or the size of a 20kg sack of grain), was used in trade. But dishonest merchants would shrink the ephah to cheat buyers, a practice that corrupted justice and betrayed the covenantal identity of God’s people. Tampering with standard measures was more than fraud; it was a violation of the societal order, driven by greed. And greed, at its core, is a form of idolatry—it dishonors God by placing personal gain above His name.

In the vision, a woman—symbolizing wickedness—is sealed inside the ephah with a heavy lead cover. Two winged beings carry her away to the land of Shinar, ancient Babylon, the site of the Tower of Babel. This act is not exile but divine quarantine: God removing the source of corruption from among His people, just as He renewed His covenant with Abraham after Lot chose to dwell in Sodom.

The flying scroll, then, is not merely a warning—it is a watchtower in the sky. It declares that God’s eyes roam from one end of heaven to the other, guarding His people and restraining evil. What appears as a curse to the wicked is a shield to the faithful. Just as law enforcement deters criminals but reassures citizens, so God’s judgment brings peace to those who trust in Him.

The woman in the ephah also evokes the downfall of Tyre and Babylon—the great harlot of Revelation, drunk on the blood of the saints, who is cast into the sea and remembered no more. Her destruction signals the end of oppression and the dawn of divine peace. The fall of the enemy is the rise of God’s kingdom.

So today, under the gaze of the One whose eyes are like flames of fire, we sing songs of peace and gratitude. May His watchful presence guard our hearts, restrain our wandering desires, and guide us along the path of righteousness. May we live each day under the banner of His justice and the shelter of His grace.
