Age is very important to the Vietnamese and an early question will often be "How old are you?" The answer determines both the form of address they will use and their behavior. They find it difficult to guess the ages of foreigners and even a couple of years' difference between people changes the pecking order. In works situations, seniority in position usually comes with age and experience. The Vietnamese expect foreigners to observe these rules and can be quite flustered if a young expatriate does not give an older colleague the respect that they believe should be forthcoming. The young person automatically loses the respect of the others.
