㉠ 목적절을 이끌어: ⦗(so) that ... may do, in order that ... may do로 목적의 부사절을 이끌어⦘ 《that-절 속에서 may 〔might〕를 쓰는 것은 딱딱한 표현이며, can 〔could〕, will 〔would〕이 쓰임; 또 구어에서는 종종 that이 생략됨》 …하기 위해, …하도록

결과 접속사 that은 생략 가능 : was so great [that] he had to be carried by the soldier 너무나도 커서[심해서] 그는 군인들에 의해서 운반되어야만 했다 [결과] 그는 군인들에 의해서 운반되어야만 할만큼 컸다.

a. so + 형용사/부사 + that S + V ~ 너무 …해서 (그 결과)~하다 that은 결과를 나타내는 접속사

= b. so+형용사+관사+명사+that S+V (어순 주의)

= c. such + (a/an) + (형용사) + 명사 + that S + V... 반드시 명사가 있어야 함

   He is so honest that we trust him. (그는 매우 정직해서 우리는 그를 신임한다.)

    = He is so honest a man that we trust him.

  = He is such an honest man that we trust him. - * as, too, how도 as와 같은 어순을 갖는다.

[결과 정도] too ~ to … = so ~ that+cannot … <너무~해서 …할 수 없다(하지 않는다).>

= He is tall that he can reachthe ceiling. (그는 키가 커서 천장에 닿을 수 있다.)

◉ The problem is easy enoughfor him to solve. (그 문제는 그가 풀 수 있으리만큼 충분히 쉽다.)

= The problem is soeasy that he cansolve it. (그 문제는 대단히 쉬워서 그는 그것을 풀 수 있다.)

  [결과 정도] not [never] too ~ to… = not [never] so ~ that … not <…할 수 없으리만큼 너무 ~하지는 않다.>

◉ 그가 아무리 늙었을지라도 그 일을 할 수 있다.

He is not too old to dothe task.

so old that he can notdo the task.

= However old he may be, he cando the task.

= He is not soold but he cando the task.

㉢ 목적 결과는 일반적으로 컴마가 중요하지만 때로는 컴마가 생략되기도 한다.

•The burglar wore gloves so that there might be no finger-prints visible.

[목적] 그 강도는 지문이 하나도 보이지 않도록 하기 위하여 장갑을 끼고 있었다.

•The burglar wore gloves, so that there might be no finger-prints visible.

강도가 장갑을 끼고 있었으므로, 지문이 하나도 보이지 않았다.

• He ran so he wouldn't miss the bus. [목적]

• He ran quickly so he got there in time. [결과] 빨리 뛰어 시간 안에 도착했다.

㉣ so that이 조건을 나타낸다.

• Any day will do, so that it be fine. [조건 =if only] 날씨만 좋다면 아무 날이나 다 좋다.

[참고] He studied very hard so that he passed the exam easily. 목적이냐 결과냐?

[목적으로 보면] 그는 매우 열심히 공부하셨다. / 그가 쉽게 그 시험을 합격하기 위하여

[결과로 보면] 그는 매우 열심히 공부하셨다. / 그 결과 그가 쉽게 그 시험을 합격하였다

그러나 뜻을 분명히 하기 위해서 조동사나 컴마를 넣는다.

[목적] He studied very hard so that he might[could] pass the exam easily. - 컴마가 없다.

[결과] He studied very hard, so that he passed the exam easily. 컴마가 있다.

마치 우리가 to부정사의 의미를 분명히 하기 위해 in order to나 so as to를 사용하는 것과 같다.
