The Little Prince (31.32)

 The idea of the herd of elephants made the little prince laugh. "we would have to put them one on top of the other," he said. But he made a wise comment: "Before they grow so big, the baobabs start out by being little." "That is strictly correct," I said. "But way do you want the sheep to eat the little baobabs?" He answered me at once, "oh, come, come!", as if he were speaking of something that was self-evident. And I was obliged to make a great mental effort to solve this problem, without any assistance.

 코끼리 한 떼라는 말을 듣고 어린 왕자는 웃었다. "코끼리를 포개 놓으면 되겠구만" 하고 왕자가 말했다. 그리고는 꽤 재치 있는 말을 했다. "큰 바오밥도 처음에는 작은 것이 커진 것 아냐?" "그야 그렇지." 내가 말했다. "그런데 왜 작은 바오밥 같은걸 양에게 먹이려고 하지?" 왕자는 즉시 대답했다. "아니, 그것도 모르겠어?" 왕자는 마치 자명한 이치도 모르느냐는 듯이 말했다. 그래서 나는 내 머리를 짜내어 혼자서 그 뜻을 생각해 내지 않으면 안 되었다.

 Indeed, as I learned, there were on the planet where the little prince lived - as on all planets- good plants and bad plants. In consequence, there were good seeds from good plants,and bad seeds from bad plants. But seeds are invisible. They sleep deep in the heart of the earth's darkness, until some one among them is seized with the desire to awaken. Then this little seed will stretch itself and begin - timidly at first - to puch a charming little spring inoffensively upward toward the sun.

 그 뜻은 이러했다. 왕자가 살고 있는 별에는, 다른 별들도 그러하듯이 좋은 식물과 나쁜 식물이 있었다. 그러므로 좋은 식물의 좋은 씨와 나쁜식물의 나쁜 씨가 있었다. 그러나 이 씨들은 눈에 보이지 않는다. 이 씨들은 캄캄한 땅 속 어느 한 가운데에서 깊이 잠들어 있다가 그 중의 어떤 씨가 얼른 눈을 떠 볼 욕망에 사로 잡힌다. 그리하여 눈을 뜬 씨는 기지개를 켜고 처음에는 조심조심해서 아름답고 어린 싹을 햇빛을 향해 쑥 내밀어 뻗는다.

 If it is only a sprout of radish or the spring of a rose - buch, one would let it grow wherever it might wish. But when it is a bad plant, one must destroy it as soon as possible, the very first instant that one recognizes it.

 그것은 무의 싹이라던가 혹은 장미의 어린 줄기라면 자라고 싶은 대로 그대로 자라게 두어도 좋다. 그러나 나쁜 식물이라면 눈에 띄는 대로 곧 뽑아 버리지 않으면 안 된다.

 32.  Now there were some terrible seeds on the planet that was the home of the little prince;and these were the seeds of the baobab. The soil of that planet was infested with them. A baobab is something you will never, never be able to get rid of if you attend to it too late. It spreads over the entire planet. It bores clear through it with its roots. And if the planet is too small, and the baobabs are too many, they split it in pieces...

 그런데 어린 왕자의 고향인 별에는무서운 씨가 있었다. 바로 그 씨는 바오밥의 씨였다. 이 별의 땅에는 온통 그 씨앗 투성이였다. 바오밥이라는 나무는 빨리 없애 버리지 않으면 나중에는 결코 제거할 수 없는 식물이다. 바오밥은 그 별 전체에 널리 퍼져서 그 뿌리가 별을 꿰뚫는다. 만일 별이 작고 바오밥은 너무 많이 있으면 별은 산산이 터져 버리고 만다......
