folk psychology의 번역어

책을 읽다가 “folk psychology”라는 단어를 보고 어떻게 번역해야 할지 망설여졌다. 그래서 일단 구글(https://www.google.co.kr)에서 검색해 보았다. 그러자 수 많은 번역어들이 쏟아져 나왔다.

동네 심리학, 문화 심리학, 민간 심리학, 민속 심리학, 민족 심리학, 민중 심리학, 상식 심리학, 일반인 심리학, 일상 심리학, 통속 심리학

“folk psychology”를 적용하여 사람들은 자신 또는 남의 심리를 설명한다. 장례식에서 “엄마, 저 아줌마 왜 울어?”라는 질문을 듣고 “저 아줌마 아빠가 하늘 나라에 가셔서 슬퍼서 우시는 거야”라고 답할 때 엄마는 “folk psychology”를 적용한 것이다. 이 때 엄마는 특별히 심리학을 배웠기 때문에 그런 식으로 설명한 것이 아니다. 그런 식으로 설명하는 법을 “그냥” 안다.

“folk psychology”는 행동주의 심리학, 인지 심리학, 정신분석, 진화 심리학과 같은 체계적 학파의 심리학과 대비된다. “folk psychology”와 “commonsense psychology(상식 심리학)”는 동의어라고 보아도 될 것 같다.

독일어에서는 “Alltagspsychologie”라고 한다. “Alltag”가 “일상”이라는 뜻이기 때문에 “Alltagspsychologie”를 “일상 심리학”이라고 번역할 수도 있을 것이다.

진화 심리학계에서는 “folk psychology”의 상당 부분이 자연 선택에 의해 진화한 마음 이론 모듈(ToMM, Theory of Mind Module)이라고 생각한다. 백지론적 경향을 보이는 학자들은 “folk psychology”의 거의 모든 것이 학습의 산물이라고 볼 것이다.

구글 검색 결과 얻은 번역어들 중에서 다음은 매우 부적절해 보인다.

동네 심리학, 문화 심리학, 민족 심리학

“동네 심리학”이라고 번역한 의도는 대충 짐작이 가지만 너무 거시기한 번역어다.

“문화 심리학”은 말도 안 되는 번역어다.

“민족 심리학”도 말도 안 되는 번역어다.

“민속(民俗)”의 사전적 의미는 “민간 생활과 관계된 생활 풍속이나 습관, 신앙, 기술, 전승 문화 등을 통틀어 이르는 말”이다. 따라서 “민속 심리학”이라는 번역어가 틀렸다고 보기는 힘들다. 하지만 “민속 심리학”이라고 하면 문화 인류학자가 산업화되지 않은 문화권을 연구하는 것이 떠오른다.

“통속(通俗)”의 사전적 의미는 “전문적이 아니고 일반 사람에게 널리 쉽게 통하는 것”이다. 사전적 의미만 생각해 보면 “통속 심리학”은 아주 훌륭한 번역어다. 하지만 “통속적이다”라는 말에는 부정적인 뉘앙스가 너무 많이 담겨 있다.

“민중(民衆)”에는 “보통 피지배층을 이루는 노동자, 농민 등을 이르는 말”이라는 뜻도 있다. 그래서 “민중 심리학”이라고 하면 피지배층의 심리학이라는 오해를 살 수 있다.

결국 다음 번역어들이 남는다.

민간 심리학, 상식 심리학, 일반인 심리학, 일상 심리학

나라면 위의 네 번역어 중에 하나를 쓰겠다. 구글 검색을 뛰어넘는 쌈박한 번역어는 생각해내지 못했다.

다만 “folk psychology”를 “상식 심리학”으로 번역하면 “folk psychology”와 “commonsense psychology”를 구분해서 번역할 수 없다는 단점이 있다.

진화 심리학자들은 “folk physics”와 “folk biology”에 해당하는 것도 자연 선택에 의해 진화했다고 보며 이제는 그런 것들의 선천성을 입증하는 증거들을 꽤나 많이 모았다.

이제는 심지어 도덕성의 상당 부분도 선천적이며 자연 선택의 산물이라는 점을 어느 정도 설득력 있게 입증하고 있다. “folk ethics”라는 용어도 쓰이는 것 같다.
