콜로노스의 오이디푸스, 1

어린 맏딸 안티고네에게 의지한체 테베를 떠난 오이디푸스는

아테네의 한 지역인 콜로노스에 도착한다. 

이곳이 어디냐고 묻자, 그지역에 사는 이가 

그곳을 설명한다. 

Stranger

Whatever I can tell you, I will tell.

This country, all of it, is blessed ground;

The god of the sea loves it; in it the fire carrier 

Prometheus has his influence; in particular

That spot you rest on has been called this earth's

Doorsill of Brass, and buttress of Great Athens.

All men of this land claim descent from him

Whose statue stands near-by: Colonus the horseman,

And bear his name in common with their own.

That is this country, stranger, hornored less

In histories than in the hearts of the people.

내가 할 수 있는 말은 무엇이든 다 할 것이오.

이 곳은, 무엇보다도, 축복받은 땅이오.

바다의 신이 사랑한 땅이고, 불은 가져온

프로메테우스가 힘을 발휘하는 곳이오.특히

당신이 앉아있는 그 자리는 이 땅의 

황동 문지방, 위대한 아테네인들의 지지대라 불리는 것이오.

이 땅의 모든 남자들은  옆에 있는 조각상의 

후손이라 주장하는데,바로 말 탄 남자 콜로누스요.

사람들은 그의 이름을 자신들의 이름에 쓰지요.

이곳이 그런 곳이오, 이방인, 사람들의 마음 속에선

존중되나 역사에선 덜 대우 받지요.
