HOUSE
by D.J. Yoon
During art class, our teacher said
Go draw the playground up ahead.
So out we went with paper white
To sketch the trees and sky so bright.
But I, instead of what I saw
Chose something deeper I could draw.
Not just the swings, the grass, the slide
But what I held so deep inside.
With rent so high, we move around
No steady place, no lasting ground.
My mom and dad go here and there
With hurried steps and worried care.
So I drew them a cozy place
A home filled up with warmth and space.
A little yard, some trees so green
The nicest home they’d ever seen.
A house where we could always stay
And never have to move away.
When I turned in my drawing then
My teacher frowned and said again.
Now where on earth did you find this?
No place like that exists, I guess.
But I stood tall and answered true
With courage that I somehow knew.
It’s in my heart, both warm and bright
A place I see with hope and light.

Appreciation Review 感想
This lovely children’s poem uses simple rhymes and clear words to share a warm and touching message.
It tells the story of a child who chooses to draw not what is seen outside, but a dream of a safe and happy home for the family.
Even though the topic of moving homes and money problems can be serious, the poem explains it in a gentle and easy way that children can understand.
The rhythm makes it pleasant to read aloud, and the images are easy to picture.
Most of all, the ending shows courage and hope, reminding young readers that their dreams and feelings matter.
Overall, it is a kind and meaningful poem that speaks to both the heart and the imagination.
