Lee Hyoung-il, nominee for deputy prime minister and minister of finance and economy, vowed to make price stability a top priority Wednesday, calling grocery prices a key gauge of the economic team’s performance.

이형일 기획재정부 부총리/재정부 장관 후보는 2일 기자회견에서 물가 안정을 최우선 과제로 삼겠다고 밝히며, 식료품 가격이 경제팀의 성과를 가늠하는 핵심 지표라고 강조했다.

“Price stability is the foundation of people’s livelihoods and the starting point for narrowing economic polarization,” Lee, currently the first vice finance minister, said during a press briefing. “High prices weigh more heavily on vulnerable groups, making inflation control the economic authorities’ biggest mission.”

이 후보는 “물가 안정은 국민 생활의 근간이자 경제 양극화 해소의 출발점”이라며, “높은 물가는 취약계층에 더 큰 부담을 주기 때문에 물가 안정은 경제 당국의 가장 중요한 과제”라고 강조했다.

Lee also said he would seek to roll out additional measures to keep prices of key Chuseok holiday items in check.

이 후보는 또한 추석 주요 생필품 가격 안정을 위한 추가 대책을 추진하겠다고 밝혔다.

The remarks came after the government announced Tuesday that it would release a record 180,000 tons of Chuseok food staples and offer 100 billion won ($73 million) in discounts on agricultural, livestock and fishery products.

이러한 발언은 정부가 화요일 추석 식료품 18만 톤을 사상 최대 규모로 공급하고 농수산물에 1,000억원(약 7,300만 달러) 규모의 할인혜택을 제공한다고 발표후 나왔다.

During a Cabinet meeting the same day, President Lee Jae Myung also urged the nominee to keep a close watch on prices of Chuseok staples, joking that he could withdraw the nomination if prices were not brought under control. The nominee responded that he would “definitely get them under control.”

같은 날 각료회의에서 이재명 대통령은 지명자에게 추석 식료품 가격을 면밀히 주시할 것을 당부하며, 가격이 안정되지 않으면 지명을 철회할 수도 있다고 농담조로 말했다. 지명자는 "반드시 안정시키겠다"고 답했다.

At Wednesday’s press briefing, the nominee pledged to use the fiscal space created by strong semiconductor exports and other factors to provide bold support for vulnerable groups, including young people, small businesses and small and medium-sized enterprises, so they are not left behind by economic growth.

수요일 기자회견에서 지명자는 반도체 수출 호조 등으로 확보된 재정 여력을 활용해 청년, 소기업, 중소기업 등 취약계층을 위한 과감한 지원을 제공하여 경제 성장의 혜택을 놓치지 않도록 하겠다고 약속했다.

Outlining plans to improve coordination across ministries, he said that, if appointed, he would establish an ad hoc meeting to bring together relevant ministers and officials from the presidential office to resolve differences over major issues with significant economic implications.

또한 부처 간 협력 강화 방안을 설명하며, 임명될 경우 주요 경제 사안에 대한 이견을 해소하기 위해 관련 장관 및 대통령실 관계자들이 모이는 특별회의를 구성하겠다고 밝혔다.

“I will work to accelerate economic growth and solidify the rebound in potential growth,” he said.

“경제성장을 가속화하고 잠재성장률의 반등을 공고히 하기 위해 노력하겠다.”라고 그는 말했다.

Born in 1971, Lee would become the first person born in the 1970s to serve as Korea’s top economic policymaker if appointed, fueling hopes that he will bring a fresh dynamic to the bureaucracy.

1971년생인 이차관이 임명될 경우 1970년대생으로는 처음으로 한국 최고 경제 정책 결정권자가 되며, 이는 그가 관료 조직에 새로운 활력을 불어넣을 것이라는 기대를 불러일으킨다.

He also faces a series of major economic challenges from the outset.

그는 또한 취임 초기부터 여러 가지 주요 경제적 과제에 직면해 있다.

Among his immediate priorities will be refining and securing parliamentary approval for the government’s proposed tax reform package, along with stabilizing the country’s housing market.

He will also have to navigate the National Assembly’s review of the 2027 budget proposal and its annual audit of government ministries, while making the case for large-scale fiscal investment without compromising fiscal soundness.

또한 그는 국회의 2027년도 세출예산 심의와 정부 부처별 세출정식을 거치면서 재정 건전성을 훼손하지 않는 범위 내에서 대규모 재정 투자를 추진해야 한다.
