On Saturday, 16th March, six teams from Singapore and Malaysia gathered at the MCM Oval for the annual occurrence of the Cricket Straits competition. As expected, it didn’t take long for the morning dew to rise and reveal an outfield which is currently at its prime, thanks to the kind weather that we have had in the Lent term. Competitors set about their business early on, as the group games were played with intensity and great spirit throughout the morning. As ever, the 6-a-side format provided some thrills and spills along the way and it was UWC Dover and the PG Scorchers who set the early pace with some excellent line and length bowling, backed up with some quality striking of the ball. This year saw the first outing for two MCM teams and both sides did themselves proud, each with a win and a loss in their group matches.

After a hearty lunch in the Dining Hall, the players took to the field in the afternoon to see out the play-off matches. SMKPN Boys v SMKPN Girls was first up, with the girls’ team forcing the match to the final over before being narrowly beaten. This was the first girls’ side to play on the Oval and we will certainly be looking to follow suit with an MCM team in the near future. MCM Blues v MCM Reds playing for third place was next, with the Blues team showing too much class in the bowling department to allow their fellow pupils a sniff at what would have been a major upset on the day. This was followed by the much anticipated final between UWC Dover and the PG Scorchers. In the end, the Dover team was too good for the Scorchers, as their consistency and reliability with the ball restricted their opposition to just 35 runs. This was quickly chased down by some big hitting and a few large maximums were met with cheers from spectators around the ground. A well deserved victory for UWC Dover and we look forward to meeting them again with our U15 side next term.
Overall, an excellent day for cricket at the College.
