Korean bishop consecrates diocesan martyrs' shrine Violent persecution occurred in several spurts throughout the 19th century in KoreaJune 2, 2016Bishop Peter Lee Ki-heon of Uijeongbu consecrated the diocese's first martyr shrine in the South Korean city of Yangju where five martyrs lost their lives for their faith. Some 500 Catholics, including Yangju mayor Lee Seong-ho, attended the May 28 ceremony led by the bishop. The diocese has tombs of martyr Saints Nam Jong-sam and Hwang Sa-young but there were previously no shrines dedicated to martyrs. During the 1866 Byeongin Persecution, John Kim Yun-oh and his wife Martha Kwon, Maria Kim Maria and Park Seo-bang were also martyred at the site of the shrine, which is located in the former Yangju office site of the Joseon Dynasty. Augustine Hong Song-won also died there during the Mujin Persecution in 1868. Widespread, violent persecution occurred in several spurts throughout 19th century Korea. It is believed that more than 10,000 Christians were martyred during those periods. Related Reports |
