Although she was expected to live a comfortable life, she decided to become a nurse. At that time, nursing was not considered a respectable profession, and nurses were often poorly educated. However, Nightingale believed that nursing was meaningful work that could save people's lives. Her most important work was done during the Crimean War. Many wounded soldiers had been sent to hospitals where the conditions were extremely poor. The patients were not properly cared for, and diseases were easily spread. Nightingale and the nurses who worked with her improved the hospital environment. The wards were cleaned regularly, patients were provided with better food, and medical supplies were organized more carefully. Nightingale also used statistics to show the importance of hospital hygiene. The number of deaths caused by disease was recorded and analyzed. Through this information, she demonstrated that many deaths could be prevented if hospitals were kept clean and patients were properly cared for. Her ideas were later accepted by many medical professionals, and better hygiene practices were introduced in hospitals. After the war, Nightingale continued working to improve nursing. A nursing school was established at St Thomas' Hospital in London with her support. Nurses were trained systematically there, and nursing education was improved. As a result, nursing gradually became recognized as a professional occupation. Her methods of nursing education were also adopted in other countries. What I find most impressive about Nightingale is that she did not simply help individual patients. Her work shows that one person's ideas can lead to meaningful changes in society. As a student who is interested in nursing, I was especially inspired by Nightingale's attitude. Nurses today are trained professionally, and patients are cared for in much better environments than in the past. Many of these changes have been influenced by the standards that Nightingale helped establish. Her work has shown me that nursing is not only about treating patients but also about protecting their health and improving the healthcare environment. In conclusion, Florence Nightingale was a person who worked for the public good by improving nursing and hospital conditions.
