성경말씀: 고린도 전서 8-9장

Scripture Reading: 1 Corinthians 8~9

본문에서 “우상의 제물에 대하여 우리가 다 지식을 가졌음을 알지만 지식은 교만하게 하고 사랑은 덕을 세우므로, 무엇을 안다 생각하는 사람은 마땅히 알아야 할 것을 알지 못하는 것이라. 그러나 하나님을 사랑하는 자는 하나님께서 아시느니라. 세상에 하나님은 오직 한 분이시고 우상은 신이 아니므로 우상의 제물을 먹어도 아무것도 아님을 우리가 앎이라(8:1-4)” 하였듯, 진정한 신은 오직 하나님 한 분이시고, 우상들은 결코 신이 아니고 아무 능력도 없지만, 그런 초보적인 지식과 생각에 속지 않아야 하고, 복음의 진리를 찾지 않고 방종하는 죄에 빠지지 않아야 됩니다.

For the idols are not gods and have no power. The only true God is the Creator God. However, we must not fall into the sin of being fooled by such basic knowledge or failing to seek the truth of the gospel, as “Now about food sacrificed to idols: We know that, ‘We all possess knowledge. Be knowledge puffs up while love builds up. Those who think they know something do not yet know as they ought to know. But whoever loves God is known by God. So then, about eating food sacrificed to idols: We know that, An idol is nothing at all in the world, and that ‘There is no God but one. (8:1-4)”

그래서 “비록 하늘과 땅에 신이라 불리는 자들과 우상들이 많이 있으나, 우리에게는 한분 하나님 아버지가 계시니 만물이 그에게서 났고 우리도 그를 위하여 있으며 예수 그리스도 한 주께서 계시니 만물들과 우리도 그를 통해 나왔고 살아감이라. 그러나 모든 사람이 그것을 아는 것은 아니므로 어떤 이들은 지금까지 우상에 대한 관습이 있어 우상의 제물을 먹으면 우상에게 바쳐진다 생각하므로 양심이 약해지고 더럽혀지느니라. 그러나 음식을 먹지 않아도 나빠지지 않고 먹어도 더 좋아지지 아니하나니 음식은 우리를 하나님 앞으로 데려가지 못함이라(8:5-8)” 하였듯, 우상이나 우상에게 바쳐진 제물은 아무것도 아니라 가르치지만, 우상의 재물을 먹음으로 인하여 은연중 죄악에 물들지 않도록 조심해야 합니다.

So, the text teaches that idols and sacrifices offered to idols are nothing, but we must not be tainted with sin or cause others to stumble by eating food offered to idols, as “For even if there are so called gods, whether in heaven or on earth, as indeed there are many gods and many lords, yet for us there is but one God, the Father, from whom all things came and for whom we live, and there is but one Lord, Jesus Christ, through whom all things came and through whom we live. But not everyone possesses this knowledge. Some people are still so accustomed to idols that when they eat sacrificial food they think of it as having been sacrificed to a god, and since their conscience is weak, it is defiled. But food does not bring us near to God, we are no worse if we do not eat, and no better if we do. (8:5-8)”

왜냐하면 “너희의 자유로운 행위가 믿음이 연약한 자들에게 걸림돌이 되지 않게 조심하라. 지식을 가진 너희가 우상의 신당에서 음식을 먹으면 믿음이 약한 자들이 보고 양심에 담력을 얻어 우상의 제물을 먹지 않겠느냐, 그러면 그리스도께서 위하여 죽으신 믿음이 연약한 형제가 너의 지식 때문에 멸망하고, 너희가 형제의 약한 양심을 상하게 하면 그리스도께 죄가 되느니라. 그러므로 나의 음식으로 형제가 실족할 수 있다면 형제를 실족시키지 않기 위하여 나는 영원히 고기를 먹지 아니하리라(8:9-13)” 하였듯, 믿음이 연약하여 우상이나 귀신을 두려워하는 사람들이 실족하지 않게 배려하며 절제해야 되기 때문입니다.

Because, we have a responsibility to be cautious, considerate and watchful of those whose faith is weak and who fear idols or demons, so that they do not stumble, as “Be careful, however, that the exercise of your rights does not become a stumbling block to the weak. For if someone with a weak conscience sees you, with all your knowledge, eating in an idol’s temple, won’t that person be emboldened to eat what is sacrificed to idols? So, this weak brother or sister, for whom Christ died, is destroyed by your knowledge. When you sin against them in this way and wound their weak conscience, you sin against Christ. Therefore, if what I eat causes my brother or sister to fall into sin, I will never eat meat again, so that I will not cause them to fall. (8:9-13)”

그러므로 “내가 우리 주 예수를 본 사도와 자유인이 아니냐 주 안에서 내가 헌신한 결과가 너희 아니냐, 내가 사도라는 것을 주 안에서 인친 것이 너희니 다른 사람들에게는 내가 사도가 아닐지라도 너희에게는 사도라. 나를 비판하는 자들에게 변론하리라. 우리가 먹고 마실 권리가 없겠느냐, 우리가 다른 사도들과 주의 형제들과 게바와 같이 믿음의 자매를 아내를 데리고 다닐 권리가 없겠느냐, 어찌 나와 바나바만 일하지 않을 권리가 없겠느냐(9:1-6)” 하였듯, 복음을 전하는 자들은 복음으로 말미암아 살도록 하나님께서 정하셨음을 알면서도 자신을 절제하며 값없이 복음을 전하며 헌신하는 본을 보이며 가르치게 하셨습니다.

Therefore, God has set an example of self-sacrifice by preaching the gospel freely, without demanding their own rights, and with moderation, even God has ordained them to live by the gospel, those who preach the gospel, as “Am I not free? Am I not an apostle? Have I not seen Jesus our Lord? Are you not the result of my work in the Lord? Even though I may not be an apostle to others, surely, I am to you. For you are the seal of my apostleship in the Lord. This is my defense to those who sit in judgement on me. Don’t we have the right to food and drink? Don’t we have the right to take a believing wife along with us, as do the other apostles and the Lord’s brothers and Cephas? Or is it only I and Barnabas who lack right to not work for a living? (9:1-6)”

그리고 “누가 자비량으로 군사가 되고 누가 포도를 심고 열매를 먹지 아니하며 누가 양떼를 기르고 젖을 먹지 않겠느냐, 내가 사람의 관점에서 말하느냐 율법도 똑같이 말하지 않느냐, 모세의 율법에 곡식을 밟아 떠는 소에게 망을 씌우지 말라 기록하였으니 하나님께서 어찌 소들을 위하여 말씀하심이냐, 확실히 우리를 위하여 말씀하심이 아니냐 밭가는 자는 소망을 가지고 갈고 곡식을 떠는 자는 함께 얻을 소망을 가지고 떠는 것이니 우리를 위하여 기록된 것 아니냐, 너희에게 영적인 씨앗을 뿌린 우리가 물질적인 열매를 거두면 지나치다 하겠느냐, 다른 사람들이 너희에게 그런 권리를 가졌다면 우리도 받아야 마땅하지 않겠느냐 그러나 그리스도의 복음에 장애가 없게 하려고 우리는 그런 권리를 쓰지 않고 범사에 참느니라(9:8-12)” 하였듯, 성경 말씀을 인용하며 절제하며 섬기는 사랑이 가장 중요하다 가르치게 하셨습니다.

And God taught us that the most important thing is to love with moderation and service, quoting the Bible, as “Do I say this merely on human authority? Doesn’t the Law say the same thing? For it is written in the Law of Moses: Do not muzzle an ox while it is treading on the grain. Is it about oxen that God is concerned? Surely, he says this for us, doesn’t he? Yes, this was written for us, because whoever plows and threshes should be able to do so in the hope of sharing in the harvest. If we have sown spiritual seed among you, is it too much if we reap a material harvest from you? If others have this right of support from you, shouldn’t we have it all the more? But we did not use this right. On the contrary, we put up with anything rather than hinder the gospel of Christ. (9:8-12)”

그러므로 “성전에서 일하는 이들은 성전에서 나는 것을 먹고 제단에서 섬기는 이들은 제단에 바쳐진 것을 먹는 줄 너희가 알지 못하느냐, 주께서도 복음 전하는 자들이 복음으로 말미암아 살리라 똑같이 말씀하셨음이라. 그러나 내가 그런 권리를 하나도 쓰지 않았고 내가 죽을지라도 아무도 내 자랑을 헛되게 하지 못하게 하리니 너희가 내게도 그와 같이 하여 달라는 것도 아니라. 만일 복음을 전하지 아니하면 내게 화가 있을 것이고 내가 부득불 해야할 일이므로 내가 복음을 전할지라도 자랑할 것이 없음이라. 내가 자의로 복음을 전하면 보상을 받겠으나 자의가 아닐지라도 나는 사명을 받았음이라(9:13-17)” 하였듯, 자신에게 허락된 권리를 다 쓰지 않고 절제하고 양보하며 섬기는 사랑이 가장 중요합니다.

Therefore, the most important thing is to love with restraint, compromise, and service, without using the authority granted to you, as “Don’t you know that those who serve in the temple get their food from the temple, and that those who serve at the altar share in what is offered on the altar? In the same way, the Lord has commanded that those who preach the gospel should receive their living from the gospel. But I have not used any of these rights. And I am not writing this in the hope that you will do such things for me, for I would rather die than allow anyone to deprive me of this boast. For when I preach the gospel, I cannot boast, since I am compelled to preach. Woe to me if I do not preach the gospel. If I preach voluntarily, I have a reward; if not voluntarily, I am simply discharging the trust committed to me. (9:13-17)”

왜냐하면 “나의 보상이 무엇이겠느냐 복음을 전하는 권리를 내가 다 쓰지 않고 값없이 복음을 전함이라. 내가 사람에게 매이지 않고 자유하나 더 많은 사람을 얻으려고 스스로 모든 사람에게 종이 되었음이라. 유대인들을 얻으려고 유대인들에게는 내가 유대인과 같이 되었고 내가 율법 아래에 있지 않으나 율법 아래에 있는 자들을 얻으려고 율법 아래에 있는 자들에게는 내가 율법 아래에 있는 자 같이 되었으며, 내가 하나님께 율법 없는 자가 아니고 그리스도의 율법 아래에 있으나 율법 없는 자들을 얻으려고 율법 없는 자에게는 율법 없는 자와 같이 되었음이라. 약한 자들을 얻으려고 약한 자들에게 내가 약한 자와 같이 되었고 내가 아무쪼록 몇 사람이라도 구원하려고 여러 사람에게 여러 모습이 되었으니, 내가 복음에 참여하려고 복음을 위하여 모든 것을 행함이라(9:18-23)” 하였듯, 절제하며 섬기는 사랑으로만 더 많은 사람들을 믿음과 구원으로 인도하게 되고 하나님께 영광을 돌려드리게 되기 때문입니다.

Because only through self-restraint and serving love can we lead more people to faith and salvation in Christ Jesus and give full glory to God, as “What then is my reward? Just this: that in preaching the gospel I may offer it free of charge, and so not make full use of my rights as a preacher of the gospel. Though I am free and belong to no one, I have made myself a slave to everyone, to win as many as possible. To the Jews I became like a Jew, to win the Jews. To those under the law I became like one under the law, though I myself am not under the law, so as to win those under the law. To those not having the law I became like one not having the law but am under Christ’s law, so as to win those not having the law. To the weak I became weak, to win the weak. I have become all things to all people so that by all possible means I might save some. I do all this for the sake of the gospel, that I may share in its blessings. (9:18-23)”

왜냐하면 “모든 사람들이 운동장에서 달음질을 할지라도 오직 상을 받는 사람은 한 사람인 줄을 너희가 알지 못하느냐 너희도 상을 받도록 달음질하라. 경기에 참여하는 자들은 썩어 없어질 승리의 면류관을 얻으려고 엄격하게 훈련하지만 우리는 영원한 면류관을 얻으려 하노라. 그러므로 나는 목적없이 달리지 않고 허공을 치듯 싸우지 아니하며, 내가 남에게 전파한 후에 자신은 보상을 받지 못할까 두려워하며 자신을 쳐서 복종시키느니라(9:24-27)” 하였듯, 자신을 절제하며 맡겨진 사명에 죽기까지 성실하게 복종해야 마지막 시험과 심판을 이기고 구원에 이르기 때문입니다. 사랑하는 성도 여러분, 배우고 아는 지식이나 육신의 생각에 속지 말고, 자신을 절제하며 맡겨진 사명에 철저하게 순종하며 사랑으로 섬기는 삶으로 구원을 얻어 영생의 천국에 들어가시기를 예수 그리스도의 이름으로 간절히 축복하며 기도합니다. 아멘.

Because, anyone who disciplines themselves and faithfully obeys the mission entrusted to them until death, he can overcome the final test and pass through it within the grace of God Immanuel and attain salvation in Christ, as “Do you not know that in a race all the runners run, but only one gets the prize? Run in such a way as to get the prize. Everyone who competes in the games goes into strict training. They do it to get a crown that will not last, but we do it get a crown that will last forever. Therefore, I do not run like someone running aimlessly; I do not fight like a boxer beating the air. No, I strike a blow to my body and make it my slave so that after I have preached to others, I myself will not be disqualified for the prize. (9:18-23)” Dear brothers and sisters, therefore, do not be deceived by the knowledge you have learned or your own thoughts, but always be self-controlled, thoroughly obey the mission entrusted to you, and live a life of service with true love. I pray and bless you earnestly in the name of Christ Jesus, that you may attain salvation and enter the kingdom of heaven of eternal life. Amen.
