John N. Darby (1800-1882) |
Darby got his middle name from family friend Lord Nelson (Darby’s uncle, Henry Darby, commanded the Bellerophon in the Battle of the Nile under Admiral Nelson). Darby attended Trinity College in Dublin, Ireland, graduating at age 19 as a Classics Medalist. Trained for a career in law, he abandoned his practice after only a year. After a period of spiritual searching, he was ordained an Anglican deacon in 1825. In 1826, he became a priest, assigned to County Wicklow, Ireland. After a couple of years serving this rural district, Darby became dissatisfied with the Church of England. Meetings with like minded Anglicans led to the formation of the prayer and Bible study group which would come to be known as the Plymouth Brethren (from their meetings in Plymouth, England).
As the reform movement grew, Darby found himself traveling far and wide to preach its belief in the apostasy of the organized church and the infallibility of Scripture: He made trips to Germany, France, Switzerland, Italy, Holland, America, Canada, the West Indies and New Zealand. Darby wrote some 53 volumes in his lifetime. Today’s Fundamentalist churches owe much to his doctrines.

Hymns
AND IS IT SO?
Words: John N. Darby, 1872. Music: Eventide, William H. Monk, 1861 (MIDI, score).
And is it so—I shall be like Thy Son?
Is this the grace which He for me has won?
Father of glory (thought beyond all thought!)—
In glory, to His own blest likeness brought!
Oh, Jesus, Lord, who loved me like to Thee?
Fruit of Thy work, with Thee, too, there to see
Thy glory, Lord, while endless ages roll,
Myself the prize and travail of Thy soul.
Yet it must be: Thy love had not its rest
Were Thy redeemed not with Thee fully blest.
That love that gives not as the world, but shares
All it possesses with its loved co-heirs.
Nor I alone; Thy loved ones all, complete
In glory, round Thee there with joy shall meet,
All like Thee, for Thy glory like Thee, Lord,
Object supreme of all, by all adored.
The heart is satisfied; can ask no more
All thought of self is now forever o’er:
Christ, its un-mingled Object, fills the heart
In blest adoring love—the endless part.
Father of mercies, in Thy presence bright
All this shall be unfolded in the light;
Thy children all, with joy Thy counsels know
Fulfilled; patient in hope, while here below.
HARK! TEN THOUSAND VOICES CRYING
Words: John N. Darby, in Hymns for the Poor of the Flock, 1837.
Music: Rathbun, Ithamar Conkey, 1849 (MIDI, score).
Hark! ten thousand voices crying,
“Lamb of God!” with one accord;
Thousand thousand saints replying,
Wake at once the echoing chord.
“Praise the Lamb,” the chorus waking,
All in heaven together throng;
Loud and far each tongue partaking
Rolls around the endless song.
Grateful incense this, ascending
Ever to the Father’s throne:
Every knee to Jesus bending,
All in mind in heaven is one.
All the Father’s counsels claiming
Equal honors to the Son,
All the Son’s effulgence beaming,
Makes the Father’s glory known.
By the Spirit all pervading,
Hosts unnumbered round the Lamb,
Crowned with light and joy unfading,
Hail Him as the great “I AM.”
Joyful now the new creation
Rests in undisturbed repose,
Blest in Jesus’ full salvation,
Sorrow now nor thralldom knows.
Hark! the heavenly notes again!
Loudly swells the song of praise;
Through creation’s vault, Amen!
Amen! responsive joy doth raise.
