목적-so that, such that, 결과-so -- that, such -- that에 관련, 이때 that는 앞 내용과 관련된 결과를 나타내는 접속사로 볼 수있다.

󰂛 결과를 나타내는 so A that B, such A that B : “아주[너무] A해서 B하다‘ 어순에 유의

① so 형(부) that S V : 더 구어적임

② such (a) 형 명 that S V :

•It was such an easy problem that I could solve it 너무[매우] 형부해서 S는 V하다

= It was so easy a problem thatI could solve it 이 문장에서 such나 so는 ‘very’의 뜻이 강하며,

that ; ‘그래서 그결과’란 뜻 해석; 그건 너무 쉬운 문제여서 나는 그것을 풀 수 있었다

•He was such a rich man thathe could buy it = = He was so rich a man thathe could buy it

해석 ; 그는 매우 부유한 사람이어서 그것을 살 수 있었다

•The boy was sokind thathe helped us 그 소년은 매우 친절해서 우리를 도와주었다

= He was so kind a boy thathe helped us

= He was such a kind boy thathe helped us

③ so와 such의 차이 : 우선 so는 뒤에 반드시 형용사나 부사가 와야 하고 such는 반드시 명사가 나와야 합니다. The cap is so nice. = = It‘s such a nice cap. 정말 멋진 모자야.

󰂜 so that에 결과절과 목적절 및 문장 전환

so~that과 so that 과 차이

ⓛ ㉮ so ~ that ..... ; 결과절-‘너무 ~하여 ...하다‘ 여기서 so는 very의 의미이고, that은 ‘그래서’라는 뜻

•He is sorich thathe can buy it → He is veryrich, sohe can buy it

㉯ ‣ so~that 주어 can R = ~ enough to R ; 너무 ~해서 R할 수 있다

② so that ; 목적절(-하기 위하여)

㉮ -부정사- to V= in order to V= so as to V= so that 주어 may(can, will) V= in order that 주어 may(can, will) V

◉ 그는 성공하기 위해 열심히 일한다

He worked hard to[so as to, in order to] succeed. to 부정사의 용법의 착각을 피하고 뜻을 분명히 하기 위해 in order이나 so as를 to 앞에 붙여 목적의 의미를 분명히 나타낸다.

㉯ 전치사구= He works hard with a view to succeeding.

with the intention of; for the purpose of; with the view of; with the object of

㉰ 절= he works hard so that he can succeed.

㉱ 목적부정: -하지 않기 위하여

󰂝 so that에 결과절의 문장 전환시 유의할 점

㉮ 복문→단문 so 형/부 that S can not V -- = too 형/부 to V: 너무나 형/부해서 V할 수 없다.

The rock was so heavy thathe couldn't move it. [복문]그 바위는 너무 무거워 그는 그것을 옮길 수 없었다

= The rock was too heavy to move it (X-틀림) [단문]→ The rock was too heavy for him to move. (O)

[이 문장의 의미는 바위[rock]는 heavy지만 옮기는 것[move]은 he입니다. 따라서 the rock는 move할 수 없습니다. The rock was so heavy / that he couldn't move it. 주절[주절의 주어 rock) 종속절(주어 he)

= The rock was too heavy tomove it (X-틀림) The rock이 옮기는 것이 아니라 he가 옮기는 것이다. 따라서 to 부정사의 의미는 the rock이다. 그러나 이 문장에서 move의 주어는 he이다. 그러므로 move의 의미상 주어를 써주어야 한다. for himto move와 같이. 이제 to부정사 주어는 for him이다. to move라는 to부정사의 행위의 주체와 문장의 주어가 다를 경우엔, 다음과 같이 to부정사의 의미상의 주어를 써 주어야 한다. 이것은 언어의 약속이다. 그리고 the rock와 it은 동일물(the rock=it)이다. 다음 heavy, difficult, easy, hard---등과 같은 형용사는 사람을 주어로 할 수 없다. 그래서 it --for --to 용법을 사용한다. It(가주어) is too heavy for him to move the rock.와 같은 의미다. → The rock is too heavy for him to move.와 같이 바꿔쓸 수 있어 The rock was too heavy to move it.은 틀린 문장이 된다, Tom is too heavy for him to move.도 마찬가지다. 이런 경우 hard 때문에 사람이 주어가 될 수 없다지만, 이 경우는 Tom이 move의 목적어로 주어의 상승작용으로 인하여 주어자리로 이동하였다고 볼 수 있다. 그러나 Heis so poor that hecould not buy it = He is too poor to buy it. 문장의 주어와 to부정사(buy)의 행위자가 같으므로 it을 사용할 수 있다.

[이처럼 문장 주어와 to부정사의 주체[행위자]가 같을 경우엔 to부정사의 의미상의 주어를 생략함에 유의]

㉮ so that:⦗부사절을 이끄는 경우⦘ [참고] 회화체에서는 that을 생략하기도 한다.

㉠ 목적절을 이끌어: ⦗(so) that ... may do, in order that ... may do로 목적의 부사절을 이끌어⦘ 《that-절 속에서 may 〔might〕를 쓰는 것은 딱딱한 표현이며, can 〔could〕, will 〔would〕이 쓰임; 또 구어에서는 종종 that이 생략됨》 …하기 위해, …하도록

• Speak louder so(that) everybody cɑn hear you. 모두에게 들리도록 더 큰 소리로 말하세요.

• He sacrificed his life that〔so that, in order that〕 his friends might live happily. 그는 친구들이 행복하게 살 수 있도록 자기 생명을 희생했다.

㉢ 목적 결과는 일반적으로 컴마가 중요하지만 때로는 컴마가 생략되기도 한다.

•The burglar wore gloves so that there might be no finger-prints visible.

[목적] 그 강도는 지문이 하나도 보이지 않도록 하기 위하여 장갑을 끼고 있었다.

•The burglar wore gloves, so that there might be no finger-prints visible.

강도가 장갑을 끼고 있었으므로, 지문이 하나도 보이지 않았다.

• He ran so he wouldn't miss the bus. [목적]

• He ran quickly so he got there in time. [결과] 빨리 뛰어 시간 안에 도착했다.

㉣ so that이 조건을 나타낸다.

• Any day will do, so that it be fine. [조건 =if only] 날씨만 좋다면 아무 날이나 다 좋다.

[참고] He studied very hard so that he passed the exam easily. 목적이냐 결과냐?

[목적으로 보면] 그는 매우 열심히 공부하셨다. / 그가 쉽게 그 시험을 합격하기 위하여

[결과로 보면] 그는 매우 열심히 공부하셨다. / 그 결과 그가 쉽게 그 시험을 합격하였다

그러나 뜻을 분명히 하기 위해서 조동사나 컴마를 넣는다.

[목적] He studied very hard so that he might[could] pass the exam easily. - 컴마가 없다.

[결과] He studied very hard, so that he passed the exam easily. 컴마가 있다.

마치 우리가 to부정사의 의미를 분명히 하기 위해 in order to나 so as to를 사용하는 것과 같다.
