Chris's Reflections from the 2026 Netherlands Seminar

There is a Japanese saying that I have always loved…

“The day you think you know everything is the day you stop growing.”

That is exactly why I travelled from Greece to the Netherlands.

Not to collect another certificate.

Not to add another photo to my gallery.

But to become a better student…

so I can become a better teacher.

For four unforgettable days I had the privilege of training once again under the guidance of my Master, Kim Jeong Seong.

We practiced Haedong Kumdo.

We explored KiMu philosophy.

We meditated.

We experienced healing.

And we were reminded that martial arts are not only about how we move…

but about how we live.

Appear.

Change.

Disappear.

Um-Yang.

Waves.

Frequency.

As Above, So Below.

Go with the Flow.

Respect Nature.

These were not separate lessons.

They were different expressions of the same truth.

One experience, however, touched me more deeply than I can describe.

After twenty-two years beside my Master, he trusted me to perform acupuncture during our healing session.

It lasted only a few hours.

But it represented twenty-two years of learning, patience, commitment and trust.

Moments like these cannot be bought.

They can only be earned.

I would like to sincerely thank Carla Kuster, Dominic Den Drijver and Frank Heininga for organizing such an outstanding event.

Thank you to Ben De Busser, Li Schluter and Keith Fentress for the friendship, the conversations and the inspiration.

A special thank you to my Dutch friends Bas De Hoogen, Kelly Lauren Homborg, Patrick Bauwens and Sterre Van Etten for making me feel at home from the very first moment.

And thank you to every student and friend I had the pleasure of meeting.

I came to learn.

I returned home with far more than knowledge.

I returned with friendships…

with inspiration…

with responsibility…

and with the certainty that learning never ends.

Because the greatest gift a teacher can offer his students…

is to never stop being a student himself.

2026 네덜란드 세미나를 돌아보며

제가 늘 좋아하는 일본 속담이 하나 있습니다.
"모든 것을 다 안다고 생각하는 날, 그날이 바로 성장을 멈추는 날이다."
바로 그것이 제가 그리스에서 네덜란드까지 온 이유였습니다.

또 하나의 수료증을 받기 위해서도 아니고,
사진 한 장을 더 남기기 위해서도 아니었습니다.

더 나은 제자가 되기 위해.
그리고 더 나은 지도자가 되기 위해서였습니다.

4일 동안 저는 다시 한번 스승이신 김정성 총재님의 지도 아래 수련할 수 있는 큰 영광을 누렸습니다.

우리는 해동검도를 수련했고,
기무(KiMu)의 철학을 탐구했으며,
명상을 하고,
힐링을 경험했습니다.

그리고 무술은 단지 어떻게 움직이는가를 배우는 것이 아니라,
어떻게 살아가는가를 배우는 것이라는 사실을 다시 한번 깨달았습니다.

생겨나고.
변하고.
사라진다.
음양.
파동.
주파수.

As Above, So Below.
Go with the Flow.
Respect Nature.

이 모든 것은 서로 다른 수업이 아니었습니다.

하나의 진리를 다양한 모습으로 표현한 것이었습니다.
그러나 그중에서도 제 마음을 가장 깊이 울린 순간이 있었습니다.

22년 동안 스승님 곁에서 수련해 온 끝에,
스승님께서는 힐링 세션에서 직접 침 시술을 할 수 있도록 저를 믿고 맡겨 주셨습니다.

그 시간은 몇 시간에 불과했습니다.
하지만 그 몇 시간은
22년의 배움, 인내, 헌신, 그리고 신뢰를 의미하는 시간이었습니다.
이런 순간은 돈으로 살 수 없습니다.
오직 오랜 시간의 노력으로만 얻을 수 있습니다.

이처럼 훌륭한 행사를 준비해 주신 Carla Kuster, Dominic Den Drijver, Frank Heininga께 진심으로 감사드립니다.

또한 우정과 좋은 대화, 그리고 많은 영감을 함께 나누어 준 Ben De Busser, Li Schlüter, Keith Fentress에게도 깊이 감사드립니다.

그리고 처음 만난 순간부터 저를 가족처럼 따뜻하게 맞아 준 네덜란드 친구들 Bas De Hoogen, Kelly Lauren Homborg, Patrick Bauwens, Sterre Van Etten에게도 특별한 감사를 전합니다.

그리고 이번 세미나에서 만난 모든 수련생과 친구들에게도 감사드립니다.

저는 배우기 위해 이곳에 왔습니다.

그러나 집으로 돌아가는 저는,
지식만을 가지고 돌아가는 것이 아닙니다.

우정을 안고 돌아갑니다.
영감을 안고 돌아갑니다.
책임감을 안고 돌아갑니다.

그리고 배움에는 끝이 없다는 확신을 안고 돌아갑니다.

왜냐하면
지도자가 제자들에게 줄 수 있는 가장 큰 선물은,
스스로 평생 제자로 남는 것이기 때문입니다.

다시 만날 그날까지.

Thoughts on Chris's Reflections from the 2026 Netherlands Seminar

Reading Chris's reflection brought me great joy because I could see that he had taken home something far more valuable than techniques.

More importantly, he had accepted it with his heart.

Martial arts begin with learning techniques, but their true purpose is to help us understand ourselves, understand life, and ultimately transform who we are.

What touched me most was that Chris did not write about techniques, ranks, or achievements.

Instead, he wrote about learning, trust, responsibility, and the lifelong journey of becoming both a better student and a better teacher.

One part of his reflection touched me deeply.

After training together for twenty-two years, he described the moment when I entrusted him to perform acupuncture under my guidance as "a silent statement of trust."

That expression‎ moved me deeply.
In everyday life, trust usually means confidence between two people.

But on the path of cultivation, its meaning goes much deeper.

True trust gradually becomes understanding.
Understanding grows into awakening.
And awakening ultimately becomes love—not merely human affection, but an awareness of the love that exists within nature itself.

Just as trust cannot be built overnight, neither can our understanding of nature's love.

It is something we continue learning throughout our entire lives.

One sentence near the end of Chris's reflection especially stayed with me:

"The greatest gift a teacher can offer his students... is to never stop being a student himself."
I could not agree more.
The moment we believe we have learned enough is the moment our growth begins to stop.

A true teacher remains a lifelong student.
Only then can he continue inspiring others.

Chris,

Thank you for walking this path with me for the past twenty-two years.
The few hours you spent performing acupuncture under my guidance represented far more than a single lesson.
They represented twenty-two years of patience, perseverance, commitment, and trust.

Such moments cannot be bought.
They can only be earned.

I hope you will continue to deepen your understanding of Ki Mu, Healing, and the principles of nature, and share that understanding with many people in Greece.
In the end, becoming skilled with a sword is not our highest goal.

Our greatest achievement is learning how to master ourselves.

I believe you are continuing to walk that path with sincerity and dedication.

Keep following the flow.
Keep respecting nature.
And never stop being a student.

Chris의 글을 읽으며 가장 기뻤던 것은, 그가 이번 세미나에서 기술보다 더 중요한 것을 마음으로 받아들였다는 점이다.

무술은 기술을 배우는 것으로 시작하지만, 그 기술을 통해 자신의 마음을 배우고, 삶을 배우며, 결국 자신을 변화시켜 가는 과정이다.

Chris는 이번 글에서
'Appear, Change, Disappear',
음양, 자연의 흐름, 그리고 'Go with the Flow'의 의미를 단순한 이론으로 설명한 것이 아니라,
자신의 경험을 통해 느끼고 이해한 내용을 진솔하게 표현한 점이 눈에 띈다.

특히 22년 동안 함께 수련한 끝에, 처음으로 제 지도 아래 침 시술을 하게 되었던 순간을 '말없는 신뢰(Silent Statement of Trust)'라고 표현한 것이 참으로 마음에 와 닿는다.

일반적으로 신뢰란 사람과 사람 사이의 믿음을 의미한다.
그러나 수행의 길에서 말하는 믿음은 그보다 훨씬 더 깊은 의미를 가지고 있다.

믿는다는 것은 서로를 이해하기 시작하는 것이고,
이해한다는 것은 조금씩 깨달아 가는 것이며,
그 깨달음은 결국 사랑으로 이어진다.

그리고 그 사랑은 단순한 인간적인 감정을 넘어, 자연이 우리에게 늘 베풀고 있는 사랑을 깨닫는 과정이 된다.

신뢰가 하루아침에 만들어질 수 없듯이, 자연의 사랑 또한 하루아침에 깨달을 수 있는 것이 아니다.

평생 배우고, 함께 성장하며, 서로를 이해하는 과정 속에서 조금씩 마지막까지 다가가는 것이다.

또한 Chris가
"내가 배우는 것은 나만의 것이 아니라 제자들의 것이기도 하다."
라고 말한 부분은 지도자가 가져야 할 가장 중요한 마음가짐을 잘 보여준 대목이다.

진정한 지도자는 자신만 성장하는 사람이 아니라, 자신이 배운 것을 다음 세대와 나누는 사람을 말한다.

Chris,
22년이라는 긴 시간 동안 한결같이 이 길을 함께 걸어와 주어 감사한 마음을 전한다.

당신은 이제 단순히 검술을 배우는 수련생이 아니라, 그 철학과 가치를 다른 사람들에게 전할 수 있는 지도자로 성장하고 있음을 보여주고 있다.

앞으로도 검술뿐 아니라 KiMu와 Healing, 그리고 자연의 이치를 더욱 깊이 이해하며, 그리스의 많은 사람들에게 희망과 깨달음을 전해 주기를 기대한다.

검을 잘 쓰는 사람이 되는 것보다 더 중요한 것은, 자신의 마음을 다스릴 줄 아는 사람이 되어야 한다는 말이다.

그리고 그보다 더 중요한 것은,
자연의 마음을 조금씩 이해하고, 그 흐름과 하나 되어 살아가는 것이다.

저는 당신이 그 길을 한 걸음씩 꾸준히 걸어가고 있다고 믿는다.
