완전한 헌신

In India, there is a long tradition that a respected guest and certainly the Guru, must always be given food that no one else has yet tasted.

인도에는, 존경받는 손님 그리고 당연히 구루(스승)에게는 항상, 아무도 맛보지 않은 음식을 대접해야 한다는 오랜 전통이 있습니다.

However, in my childhood, I read in the Mahabharata that Krsna ate banana peelings unmindfully given by Vidura's wife. I often wondered why Krsna had accepted and eaten them.

그런데 어릴 적에 나는 마하바라타(인도의 고대 서사시)에서 크리슈나는 비두라의 아내가 아무 생각 없이 내민 바나나 껍질을 먹었다는 것을 읽었습니다. 나는 종종 크리슈나는 왜 그것을 받아서 먹었을까 궁금했습니다.

In the Ramayana, Bhilni, a lower caste woman who was very devoted to Rama, once fed Him wild berries. After gathering them she tasted every one to make sure she was only feeding Rama the sweet ones. She even told Rama that she had first tasted them, yet Rama happily ate all the fruits she gave.

라마야나(인도의 고대 서사시)에서는, 라마에게 매우 헌신적이었던 낮은 카스트 계급의 여인 빌니가, 한번은 산딸기를 라마에게 바친 적이 있었습니다. 산딸기를 따서는 단 것만 드리고 싶어서 확인하려고 일일이 맛을 보았고, 심지어 라마에게 먼저 먹어보았노라고 이야기까지 했습니다. 그럼에도 라마는 그 여인이 준 과일을 모두 기쁘게 먹었습니다.

Then, many years later, a very similar situation took place between me and Baba.

그러고 몇 년 뒤에, 나와 바바지 사이에 그와 무척 유사한 일이 일어났습니다.

On October 18, 1965 DMC was in Dumkha. On the 16th we were having a group lunch in Acarya Kuldiip's house. A brother came to tell us that Baba was at the school. We were surprised and left our meals unfinished to rush to the school. I did not even wash my hands properly but ran to the ashram.

1965년 10월 18일의 DMC 장소는 둠카였습니다. 16일에 우리는 꿀딥 아차리아의 집에서 단체로 점심식사를 하고 있었습니다. 한 형제가 와서 바바께서 학교에 와 계신다고 말했습니다. 우리는 놀라서 음식을 다 먹지도 못한 채 남겨두고 학교로 내달렸습니다. 나는 손도 제대로 못 씻고 아쉬람으로 달려갔지요.

Baba and Ma(His wife), were in separate rooms. I grabbed an broad flat board and started to fan Baba and Ma alternately. Baba said, "Please stop this business and get some food for us."

바바지와 마(부인)는 각자 다른 방에 계셨습니다. 나는 넓고 평평한 판을 쥐고 번갈아가며 바바지와 마를 부채질하기 시작했습니다. 바바께서, “이 일은 그만 두고 음식을 좀 내와라.”고 말씀하셨습니다.

I ran to tell the sisters to quickly prepare the food and went back to Baba.

나는 자매들에게 달려가서 빨리 음식을 준비하라고 말한 뒤 바바께 되돌아갔습니다.

Seeing me coming, Baba asked, "Why are you coming back empty handed, I need the food now, as I have to go."

나를 보시고 바바지는, “왜 빈손으로 오는 거야? 내가 나가봐야 해서 지금 바로 먹을 게 필요한데.”라고 말씀하셨어요.

Baba had put me in a critical condition. I ran back to the sisters and told them to hurry up but I saw that they would not be ready for a long time. I did not know what to do. Then I remembered the unfinished food in the Acarya's house. I ran back and packed the left over food in a tiffin box. Swiftly coming back I gave the food to Baba and Ma.

바바께선 나를 나무라시는 듯했습니다. 나는 자매들에게 다시 뛰어가서 서두르라고 말했습니다만 오랜 시간 동안 준비가 안 될 것이라는 걸 알았습니다. 나는 어찌 할 바를 몰랐습니다. 그러자 아차리아의 집에 남겨두고 온 음식이 생각났습니다. 나는 달려가서 도시락 통에 남은 음식을 쌌습니다. 재빨리 되돌아와서 그 음식을 바바지와 마께 드렸습니다.

Baba ate with relish, not leaving a single grain of rice and said, "It is very good."

바바께서 쌀 한 톨도 남기지 않으시고 맛있게 드시며 “정말 맛있다.”라고 하셨습니다.

I was very happy. Afterwards, Baba said, "I am going to My brother's new house to attend his house opening ceremonies for a few days. You must inform the Margiis to postpone the DMC." After that He left.

나는 무척 기뻤습니다. 그 뒤 바바께서는 “난 며칠 집들이에 참가하러 동생의 새 집으로 갈 거다. 너는 마르기들에게 DMC를 연기하라고 꼭 알려라.” 하시고 떠나셨습니다.

Then a sister came telling that Baba's food was ready.

그러자 한 자매가 와서 바바지의 음식이 준비되었다고 말했습니다.

I told them what had happened. When Acarya Kuldiip's wife heard me, she suddenly fainted. When she regained consciousness she scolded me because I had given left-over food to the Guru. Then I became a bit worried that I made a mistake. But when I recalled the stories from my childhood of Krsna and Rama, I felt that a similar experience had happened to me.

나는 그들에게 일어난 일을 말해주었습니다. 꿀딥 아차리아의 아내가 내 이야기를 듣고는 갑자기 실신해버렸습니다. 그녀는 의식을 되찾은 뒤에, 내가 구루에게 남은 음식을 드렸다고 나무랐습니다. 그래서 나는 실수했다는 생각에 조금 걱정이 되었습니다. 하지만 어린 시절 크리슈나와 라마의 이야기를 생각해보니, 유사한 일이 내게 일어났다는 것을 느꼈습니다.

After Baba left, we wondered why He had arrived two days early for the DMC.

바바께서 떠나신 뒤, 우리는 왜 바바께서 DMC보다 이틀이나 빨리 도착하셨는지 궁금하였습니다.

Later we learned that on the 15th Ac. Abhedananda had received a telephone message that Baba would be arrested. Dada Amitananda's father had filed a case against Baba accusing Him of kidnapping his son. So Baba and everybody in the ashram left Jamalpur immediately on that night for Anandapur High School. Reaching there, Dada Abhedananda woke up the LFT in charge(now named Ac. Satyatmakananda Avt.), and told him to prepare a bed for Baba.

나중에 우리는, 15일에 아베다난다 아차리아가 바바께서 체포될 지도 모른다는 전화 메시지를 받았다는 것을 알게 되었습니다. 아미타난다 다다의 아버지가 그의 아들을 납치했다면서 바바지를 고소했습니다. 그래서 바바지와 아쉬람에 있는 모든 사람들은 그날 밤 즉시 자말푸르를 떠나 아난다푸르 고등학교로 갔습니다. 그곳에 도착한 아베다난다 다다는 담당 LFT(지역봉사자, 지금은 사티야트마카난다 아차리아)를 깨워, 바바지를 위해 잠자리를 준비하라고 말하였습니다.

Early next morning Baba awoke and walked into the school yard. The teachers who saw Baba asked themselves if it was a dream or reality. Prabhas Chadra, the school principal, came rushing to the school after hearing the news. Approaching Baba, he did namaskar. Baba told him that He was there for a surprise inspection.

다음 날 일찍 바바지는 일어나셔서 학교 마당으로 걸어 들어가셨습니다. 바바지를 본 교사들은 꿈인지 생시인지 스스로에게 물어보았지요. 학교장인 프라바스 찬드라가 소식을 듣고 급히 달려왔습니다. 그는 바바께 다가가서 나마스까를 했습니다. 바바께서 그에게 깜짝 순찰중이시라고 말씀하셨습니다.

Baba asked, "How big is our land?" Jokingly, Prabhas Chandra said, "As far as You can see, Baba." Baba smiled and said, "I mean those lands that are registered with the government land department." He answered, "Seventeen acres, Baba."

바바께서, “우리 땅이 얼마나 되지?” 하고 물으셨습니다. 농담처럼, 프라바스 찬드라가 “바바께서 보시는 만큼입니다.” 라고 답하였습니다. 바바께서 웃으시며, “정부 토지과에 등록된 땅 말이야.” 라고 말씀하시자, “17 에이커입니다. 바바.”라고 그가 대답하였습니다.

Then Baba told him not to prepare breakfast but that He would take lunch in the hostel before leaving for Dumkha.

그러고 나서 바바지는 그에게 아침식사는 준비하지 말라고, 그러나 둠카로 떠나기 전에 숙소에서 점심을 드시겠다고 말씀하셨습니다.

그러니까 바바지는 18일 DMC 일정보다 빠른 15일 저녁에 급히 학교로 옮기셔서 주무시고, 16일 이른 아침에 학교장과 만나 이야기를 나눈 뒤, 아침도 거르시고 아쉬람에서 글쓴이 다다를 만난 거였군요. 얼마나 시장하셨을까요? 어쨌든 바바지는 비록 다다들이 먹다 남긴 것이었지만 형식보다 다다의 마음이, 의례보다 애정이 담긴 음식을 맛있게 드신 것 같습니다.

네, 그렇지요. 바바지가 몹시 배고프신 것을 알고 급히 음식을 챙겨드리고, 바바지는 그것이 제자들이 먹다 남은 것임을 다 아셨음에도 아무 말 안 하시고 맛있게 드셨겠네요. 그 스승에 그 제자네요(Like Guru, like deciple).
