Korea's top financial officials on Wednesday stressed the need to use higher-than-expected tax revenue to address economic disparities by funding areas directly affecting people's livelihoods, such as housing, jobs and financial support for low-income households.

한국의 주요 재정 당국자들은 수요일, 예상보다 많이 걷힌 세수를 활용해 주거, 일자리, 저소득층 금융 지원 등 국민 생활과 직결된 분야를 지원함으로써 경제적 격차를 해소해야 한다고 강조했다.

Finance Minister Lee Hyoung-il shared this view with Budget Minister Park Hong-geun, Bank of Korea (BOK) Gov. Shin Hyun-song and Financial Services Commission Chairman Lee Eog-weon during a meeting on macroeconomic issues, according to the Ministry of Finance and Economy.

재정경제부에 따르면, 이형일 재정경제부 장관은 거시경제 현안 논의를 위한 회의에서 박홍근 예산처 장관, 신현송 한국은행 총재, 이억원 금융위원회 위원장과 이 같은 견해를 공유했다.

The remarks came as Korea's tax revenue is estimated to reach a record 478.6 trillion won ($353.7 billion) this year, 88.4 trillion won higher than the original projection used to draw up the 2026 budget. The revised estimate is also 63.2 trillion won above the projection used for the supplementary budget.

이러한 발언은 올해 한국의 세수가 사상 최대 규모인 478조 6천억 원(3,537억 달러)에 이를 것으로 추산되는 가운데 나왔다. 이는 2026년 예산안 편성 당시의 당초 전망치보다 88조 4천억 원 많은 금액이며, 추가경정예산 편성 시의 전망치보다도 63조 2천억 원을 상회하는 수준이다.

During the meeting, the participants said the surplus tax revenue should be used strategically, taking the country's economic conditions into account.

회의 참석자들은 국가 경제 상황을 고려하여 초과 세수를 전략적으로 활용해야 한다고 밝혔다.

Spending should focus on areas closely linked to people's livelihoods, including housing, jobs and financial support, to address widening economic disparities, they added.

또한 이들은 확대되는 경제적 격차를 해소하기 위해 주거, 일자리, 금융 지원 등 국민 생활과 밀접한 분야에 지출을 집중해야 한다고 덧붙였다.

The participants said they would closely monitor government bond markets and implement market stabilization measures, such as conducting emergency bond buybacks or using part of the surplus tax revenue to reduce bond issuance, if necessary.

참석자들은 국채 시장을 면밀히 주시하고, 필요시 긴급 국채 매입이나 초과 세수 일부를 활용한 국채 발행 축소 등 시장 안정화 조치를 시행하겠다고 밝혔다.

The meeting marked the first of its kind since the finance minister took office this month

이번 회의는 이형일 재정경제부 장관이 이달 취임한 이후 처음으로 열린 관련 회의였다.
