Comments: EAS 50-51, Poppe 22, 74, Дыбо 13, Мудрак Дисс. 186; TMN 4, 186 ("lautgesetzlich unwahrscheinlich"). A Western isogloss. The Turk. reflex of the root is usually assumed to be *jālga- 'to lick' - which, however, also matches very well PA *ǯā́lV 'saliva, swallow' and should be rather attributed there. In Pre-Turk. we have to postulate a semantic shift 1) 'lick' > 'bite'; 2) 'saliva(te)' > 'lick'. soup나 suck이나 juice나 즙 汁이나 모두 어원은 같다.

suck (v.)
Old English sucan "to suck," from a Proto-Germanic word of imitative origin
(cognates: Old Saxon, Old High German sugan, Old Norse suga, Danish suge,
Swedish suga, Middle Dutch sughen, Dutch zuigen, German saugen "to suck")
, possibly from the same source as Latin sugere "to suck," succus "juice,
sap;" Old Irish sugim, Welsh sugno "to suck;" see sup (v.2). As a noun from c. 1300.
soup (n.)
"liquid food," 1650s, from French soupe "soup, broth" (13c.), from Late Latin
suppa "bread soaked in broth," from a Germanic source
(compare Middle Dutch sop "sop, broth"), from Proto-Germanic
*sup-, from PIE *sub-, from root *seue- (2) "to take liquid" (see sup (v.2)).

Comments: KW 332, VEWT 429. The Jpn. and Kor. forms (compared in Whitman 1985, 168, 236, and additionally in Vovin 2000 - although his further attempts to link the Kor.-Jap. root to PA *k`i̯ăli should be rejected) seem to fit here phonetically (although there is a tone discrepancy); as for semantics, one should probably reconstruct the original meaning 'suck', whence 'lick' and 'tongue' in the Eastern area. Medial *-j- has to be reconstructed to account for the loss of resonant in Kor.; it had also probably caused a dissimilation in the Western area (*si̯ōjri > *sōjri), which explains the -o-reflex in Turkic.
