전등법계 건당식, Dharma Succession Ceremony

[眞如華]

 신라의 산천은 신라 때 나무가 그 산천을 지켰고 고려 때 산천은 고려의 나무가 그 산천을 지켰고

조선시대에도 역시 그렇고 오늘 이 시대에도 오늘의 나무들이 이 시대의 산천을 지킵니다.

저나 여러분들이나 불교 2600여 년의 역사를 우리가 알고 있는 이상, 참으로 ‘법을 전한다,

무슨 건당식을 한다 ’ 하는 것이 부끄러운 일이기는 하지만 앞에서 말씀드렸듯이 어떻습니까?

이 시대에는 어쩔 수 없이 못난 우리가 이 시대의 불교를 이끌어가야 하고, 또 이 시대 불교의 대표자로서, 불교의 선두자로서, 그 자리매김을 해야 됩니다 .

 In the Silla Dynasty, the trees of Silla protected the land. In the Goryeo Dynasty, the trees of Goryeo protected the land. It was the same in the Joseon Dynasty. And today, the trees of our time protect the mountains and rivers of our world.

Since we all know the 2,600-year history of Buddhism, it feels a bit humbling and even embarrassing to say we are 'transmitting the Dharma' or holding a ceremony like this.

But, as I mentioned earlier, what do you all think?

However, as I said before, we have no choice. Even if we feel lacking, we must lead

the Buddhism of this era. We must take our place as the leaders and representatives of Buddhism today.
