Beauty comes in many sizes
More than 20 women competed for the title of Miss Jumbo Queen in Thailand on May 1. It was another ordinary beauty pageant--except for one thing: All the contestants were over 176 pounds. The annual pageant raised money for Thailand's dwindling elephant population. The pageant also gave beauty a new point of view.
According to a recent survey conducted by the Korean government, 50.8 percent of teens were concerned about their height. And over 44 percent were worried about their weight.
It's not only Koreans who are concerned about their appearance. Teens from all over the world have similar feelings. According to a survey by skincare company Dove, two-thirds of all women are disappointed with their appearance. The survey also found out that three-fourths of girls in Britain, aged 8 to 13, are dissatisfied with their appearance.
Dove has launched a campaign to change mainstream beauty standards. The company said beauty comes in different shapes and sizes. In advertising its firming moisturizer, Dove refrained from using Barbie-doll-like models. Instead it used a full-figured woman. She can now be seen on billboards in London. The model is not a typical beauty, but she looks healthy.
It was the first time the company used a full-figured model. Dove has also used a 96-year-old woman for an advertisement. Next to her aged face, the advertisement says: "Wrinkled? Wonderful?"
After the advertisements ran, sales of the firming moisturizer increased by 700 percent.
Comedians often satirize Korea's obsession with looks. Kim Hyun-sook, who plays a character "Chulsandeura," encourages women on the program to accept who they are. Yoo Min-sang has also criticized the social pressure on women to have nice bodies.
"A journey of 1,000 miles begins with a single step," an old saying goes. Although a few have challenged mainstream beauty standards, the road is still long.
Do you judge people by their looks? Test yourself. (If you agree with a statement, it counts as one point.)
1. It is a way of expressing affection if you talk about someone's looks.
2. Heavy people are dull and lazy.
3. During a blind date, I would directly tell my partner I don't like his her looks if I honestly felt that way.
4. Only slim women should wear miniskirts and tight clothes.
5. Schoolgirls look attractive when they wear skirts.
6. People should reveal their weight and height on resumes.
7. It's OK if companies only hire good-looking people.
8. Women newscasters must be young and pretty.
9. Companies are more successful if they use good-looking models.
10. TV programs that poke fun at ugly people are amusing.
11. I don't like it when ugly people star in a film or soap opera.
12. Women get plastic surgery because of personal desire, not social pressure.
Your score
0-3: You judge people by their personality.
4-6: You judge people by both looks and personality.
7-10: You tend to judge people by their looks.
11-12: You judge people only by their looks.
