Korea is "almost certain" to reach a gross national income (GNI) per capita of $40,000 this year, the finance ministry said Tuesday, as Asia's No. 4 economy grew 1 percent in the third quarter from the previous three-month period, driven by strong exports and investment.

한국의 1인당 국민총소득(GNI)이 올해 4만 달러에 이를 것이 '거의 확실하다'고 재정경제부가 화요일 밝혔다. 아시아 4위 경제국인 한국은 수출과 투자가 호조를 보인 덕분에 3분기에 전 분기 대비 1% 성장했다.

The Ministry of Finance and Economy made the assessment following the release of advance third-quarter data from the Bank of Korea (BOK), which would mark a new milestone after the country's per capita GNI, a gauge of the population's purchasing power, first surpassed the $30,000 mark in 2014.

재정경제부는 한국은행이 발표한 3분기 경제성장률 속보치를 바탕으로 이같이 평가했다. 이는 국민의 구매력을 나타내는 지표인 1인당 GNI가 2014년 처음으로 3만 달러를 넘어선 이후, 또 하나의 새로운 이정표가 될 전망이다.

"Korea maintained solid growth despite a high base effect from the first half, raising the possibility of growth in the mid-3 percent range this year," the finance ministry said.

재정경제부는 "한국은 상반기의 높은 기저효과에도 불구하고 견조한 성장세를 유지했으며, 이에 따라 올해 3%대 중반의 성장 가능성이 높아졌다"고 설명했다.

Finance Minister Lee Hyoung-il said this month Korea's economic growth for 2026 could range from 3.4 percent to 3.6 percent.

The International Monetary Fund also recently projected Korea's per capita GNI would reach the $40,000 level in 2026 and $50,000 in 2028.

The finance ministry, however, noted Korea faces structural challenges despite the strong growth, including mounting livelihood-related challenges and disparities across various areas.

다만 재정경제부는 한국이 견조한 성장세에도 불구하고, 민생 관련 어려움이 가중되고 여러 분야에서 격차가 나타나는 등 구조적인 과제에 직면해 있다고 지적했다.

"The government intends to tackle the livelihood issues and ease disparities so the benefits of economic growth can be felt in people's daily lives," the finance ministry added.

재정경제부는 "정부는 경제 성장의 혜택이 국민의 일상생활에서 체감될 수 있도록 민생 문제를 해결하고 격차를 완화해 나갈 방침"이라고 덧붙였다.
