출생하였다. 1952년 동경대학 건축학과에서 겐조 단케(Kenzo Tange)에서 사사하였으며 1953년 Cranbrook Academy of Art를 수료하고 하버드 건축대학원에서 석사학위를 취득하였다. 졸업과 함께 뉴욕의 S.O.M과 캠브리지의 Sert Jackson and Associates 에서 근무하였다. 1956년 St. Louis의 Washington University 교수로 캠퍼스 내의 Steinberg Hall을 설계하였다. 그 후 4년동안 재임하였으며 1962년부터 1965년까지 하버드 건축대학원 및 그 외 여러학교의 초청강사로 재임하였다. 1965년 일본으로 돌아와 동경에 Maki and Associates 건축사무소를 설립하고 1979년 동경대학 교수와 현재 Maki and
