becoming-with 함께-되기

The term becoming-with comes from Donna Haraway’s formulation: “We become-with each other or not at all.”1) It does not describe becoming as a transformation that takes place in isolation. It is a form of becoming that takes shape through entanglement—with places, environments, climates and materials. Over the past several years, the work has taken shape through such entanglements: reeds disappearing along Anyangcheon Stream; vines growing through the former railway residences of Soje-dong; unripe fruit from trees cut down in redevelopment areas; bamboo removed according to human preference and purpose; plants from areas affected by the wildfires that swept across Gyeongsangbuk-do in early 2025; and groundwater containing metallic elements. The work traces the emergent properties produced through these encounters. The artist establishes the conditions in which these reactions can occur, but does not determine their outcomes. Rather than acting as the sole author of the image, the artist takes part as one participant among many, negotiating with nonhuman others.
The exhibition asks how painting changes when the materials and climate of a place become part of the conditions through which an image is formed. Plants gathered from each site are used to make photosensitive emulsions. Exposed to their surroundings, they react with sunlight, air, moisture and time, gradually forming an image. Forgotten photographic printing processes that never became widely established because of their practical limitations, dyeing techniques sustained through traditional craftsmanship, and metal mordanting, which connects these two fields, all allow unpredictability to remain within the work. An unexpected result is not treated as an error, but as part of the conditions from which the image emerges. Three new works in this exhibition incorporate ash and plant remains left by the wildfires that swept through Gyeongsangbuk-do. Mineral water from Cheongsong, containing iron (Fe), is used as a mordant.2) The iron dissolved in this water, having travelled through the ground beneath the scorched landscape, subdues the colours of naturally dyed surfaces and gradually shifts them towards yellowish-brown through chemical reaction. The altered chemistry of the ground after disaster, together with the geological time carried by the minerals that have passed through it, enters the layers of colour. What happened to a place is thus carried into the surface as a trace. Yet this trace does not remain fixed. Air, moisture and light continue to act upon the work, producing minute changes over time. Yesterday’s colour is not quite today’s, and today’s will not be tomorrow’s.
Even the artist’s decisions about initial conditions and assemblage begin as responses to what plants, materials, light and time have already set in motion. Human and nonhuman actors form an alliance in which each renders the other capable, composing form together.
Becoming-with is a provisional record of that alliance, and a trace of it. It remains in process.

2) A mordant is a substance that helps dyes bind to fabric or paper and affects colour development and change. Metal salts are commonly used.
