Eleventh heaven for Korea

Korea Republic overcame a first game 3-0 defeat, two extra-times and their inner demons to be crowned Asian youth champions for the eleventh time in Malaysia on Saturday. The Asian giants along with finalists China and semi-finalists Japan and Syria had already qualified for the FIFA World Youth Championship Netherlands 2005.

The young Taeguk Warriors saved their best display of the tournament for the final match at the Cheras Stadium in Kuala Lumpur, defeating an impressive China 2-0 thanks to two first-half goals from the irrepressible Park Chu-young. The Korea University striker, tipped for the very top by many observers, struck his fifth and sixth goals of the competition with a superb individual effort (37) and a cool finish (44). Those goals earned him the topscorer prize and he was later named Emirates Player of the Tournament.

Bumpy road for champions
Things did not begin well for coach Park Sung-wha and his Warriors though. Korea were on the receiving end of a sensational 3-0 drubbing by Asia's team of the moment Iraq in the opening fixture of Group D. And after drawing 1-1 with minnows Thailand, the team backed by the fanatical legions of Red Devils only managed to qualify for the knock-out stage on goal difference.

A 105-minute extra-time winner from Shin Young-rok finally downed Uzbekistan in the quarters, while arch-rivals Japan were overcome from the penalty spot (3-1) after the teams played out a pulsating 2-2 draw.

Up against a much fresher, undefeated China, a side to whom they had lost four friendlies in the build-up to the tournament, Korea showed just why they are still considered by many to be Asia's top dogs.

Second-best China
China will be relatively pleased with second spot though. After topping Group B they overcame hosts Malaysia 3-0 and then the ambitious Syria, who had earlier ended the dream of their Middle Eastern neighbours Iraq at the quarter-final stage.

"We lost the final due to the absence of key players," said China coach Yin Tiesheng, who nevertheless started with Manchester United starlet Dong Fangzhou for the first time in the tournament. "But we would welcome the opportunity of battling against Korea in the Netherlands next year."

Although the names of three of the four semi-finalists are commonly associated with footballing success in Asia, Malaysia 2004 was a tournament where many nations aspiring for the top left a mark. With little success in recent continental competitions, semi-finalists Syria caused the greatest surprise, while Qatar, beaten in the last eight by Japan on penalties, also caused a stir. With Saudi Arabia absent and Iran disappointing, Iraq, whose perfect start threatened to attract a different kind of journalist to Malaysia's playing fields, completed another impressive showing by those "alternative" Middle Eastern nations.
   
In reaching the knock-out stage Malaysia gave their fans something to shout about, tiny Nepal picked up a win against Vietnam while mammoth India were undone by the only goal in each of their three group matches.

Asian starlets going Dutch
Not withstanding the Holland-Korea connection, all eyes will be on Park Chu-young next June after his impressive performances. Strike partner, Kim Seung-yong, is also likely to receive his fair share of attention, while the simple fact that Dong Fangzhou belongs to Manchester United will translate to an exaggerated media interest. China's other hopes for a brighter future include creator Zhou Haibin and pacy forward Zhu Ting.

For Japan, striker Takayuki Morimoto is still 16 (at time of writing) but is getting sweeter by the day while Syria captain Majed Al Haj could well feature strongly.
