My Grandpa every day

With a handcart in tow

Going around the neighborhood

Collecting paper boxes, newspapers, and bottles
That's why his hands are always black.

That’s why dirt is all over his neck.

Aunts and uncles in my neighborhood
Calling him Crow Grandpa
Teasing me whenever they happen to see me.

"Hey, Hyuk, your Grandpa,
Doesn't he even wash up!
Aren’t he even taking a bath!
So isn't he dirty for you!"

"You know what. He's my only Grandpa.

Dirty? Never!
We sleep together all the time!
Boiling sweet potatoes

We share them together!"

Whenever I finish my homework, my Grandpa says

Read a book for me

Read a newspaper for me

If I read it out loud then
He snores soon.

A house of Yonggyu's in the 3rd grade
In the furthest hill from his school
Among the houses of his friends
The smallest one
Furthermore, a semi-basement single room

But Yonggyu’s friends
Only hang out at his house
After school
They do their homework together
They read books together
They watch TV together

Then Yonggyu’s Grandma always
Boiling potatoes and ramen, says ’Eat a lot’
Peeling an apple, says ’Eat this too’
Telling us some OLD but TASTY stories
A slow pat on the back

까마귀 할아버지

우리 할아버지는 날마다

리어카를 끌고 동네 구석구석 돌아다니며

종이 상자랑 신문지랑 헌 병을 거두어들이지요

그러다 보니 늘 손도 새까맣고 목에도 때가 까맣지요

우리 동네 아주머니나 아저씨들은

우리 할아버지를

까마귀 할아버지라고 부르지요

그리고 나를 보면 놀리지요

“혁아, 너희 할아버지

낯도 안 씻고

목욕도 안 하는 것 같으데

더럽지 않나?”

“우리 할아버진데요 더럽기는요

잘 때도 같이 자고

고구마도 제가 삶아서

할아버지와 나누어 먹는데요!”

우리 할아버지는 내가 숙제를 다 하고 나면

책이나 신문을 읽어 달라고 하지요

내가 큰 소리로 읽어 드리다 보면

어느새 드르렁드르렁 코를 골지요

용규네 집

초등학교 3학년 용규네 집

학교에서도

가장 멀리 떨어져 있는 산언덕

동무들 집 가운데서도

가장 작은 집

더욱이 반지하 단칸방

그래도 동무들은

용규네 집에서만 모여 놉니다

학교 마치고 가서 숙제도 같이 하고요

책도 같이 읽고요

텔레비전도 같이 봅니다

그러면 용규 할머니가 늘

감자와 라면을 삶아서 많이 먹어라 하고요

사과를 깎아 주시며 얼른 먹어라 하고요

옛이야기를 구수하게 들려주시고요

용규와 동무들 등도 두드려 주십니다

가족의 사랑과 따뜻함을 아름답게 담아낸 동시입니다.
첫 번째 시에서 할아버지는 다른 사람들의 눈에는 가난하고 지저분해 보일 수 있지만, 손자에게는 세상에서 가장 소중하고 다정한 존재입니다. 함께 군고구마를 먹고 신문을 읽어 주는 장면은 소박하면서도 깊은 따뜻함을 전해 줍니다.

두 번째 시에서는 작고 낡은 용규의 집이 친구들과 할머니의 정 덕분에 가장 즐겁고 편안한 공간이 됩니다. 감자와 라면, 사과와 옛날이야기는 모두에게 오래도록 남을 행복한 추억을 만들어 줍니다.

이 두 편의 시를 함께 읽다 보면, 행복은 돈이나 큰 집에서 오는 것이 아니라 사랑하는 사람들과 마음을 나누는 데서 비롯된다는 사실을 자연스럽게 깨닫게 됩니다. ^-^
